Meet the person behind CEDAR.

Mike McDermid, our Director of Strategic Partnerships (CEDAR), has been leading the development of the Centre for Excellence in eDNA Analysis and Research: the first eDNA training centre with dedicated lab facilities in Western Canada, with a future home at PODS.

Mike grew up on the Salish Sea and brings 25 years in ocean conservation and sustainable seafood to the work, including helping launch the Ocean Wise seafood program.

More on CEDAR soon. 🌊

We’re thrilled to welcome internationally acclaimed wildlife cinematographer, director, and Pender Harbour local Maxwel Hohn to the PODS Advisory Board! Born and raised in ḵalpilin (Pender Harbour), BC, Maxwel is an Emmy Award-winning cinematographer, director, and commercial diving veteran who has spent more than a decade filming wildlife and wild places in some of the most remote and challenging locations on Earth.

His work has taken him around the globe and onto screens including Netflix’s Island of the Sea Wolves, National Geographic’s Secrets of the Octopus, BBC, Apple TV, IMAX, and the Las Vegas Sphere. But it was growing up right here on the Sunshine Coast that helped shape Maxwel’s deep connection to the land, ocean, and wildlife.

His work connects storytelling, science, conservation, and community. Collaborating with scientists, First Nations communities, and government organizations, his work inspires curiosity about the natural world and explores how we can better coexist with the species in which we share it.

We’re incredibly grateful to have bringing his creativity, adventurous spirit, filmmaking expertise, and deep local connections to help shape the future of PODS.

Welcome to the team, Maxwel!

Thank you, Donna Bell and Patrick Weiler for visiting the PODS Showroom today! It was a pleasure discussing our latest accomplishments and the exciting opportunities that CEDAR will bring to the Sunshine Coast and beyond.

We’re looking forward to what’s ahead and we appreciate your support on the journey to pods.

“The Sunshine Coast is defined by its connection to the ocean, and protecting our marine environment depends on strong science, innovation, and collaboration. CEDAR represents an important opportunity to build local research capacity while bringing together researchers, Indigenous partners, governments, and environmental organizations to advance new tools for understanding and protecting marine ecosystems. I look forward to seeing this initiative grow and the contributions it can make to conservation and environmental stewardship here on the Sunshine Coast and beyond.” ~ Patrick Weiler, Member of Parliament for West Vancouver–Sunshine Coast–Sea to Sky Country

Research is at the heart of PODS, and we're excited to introduce one of the initiatives we've been developing behind the scenes: CEDAR — the Centre for Excellence in eDNA Analysis and Research.

CEDAR is a proposed collaborative hub dedicated to advancing environmental DNA (eDNA) science, standards, and applied innovation. Our vision is to create a western Canadian centre where academic researchers, Indigenous Knowledge holders, government scientists, environmental practitioners, and industry partners come together to tackle some of the most pressing challenges, and opportunities, in this rapidly evolving field.

We're looking forward to sharing more about CEDAR in the months ahead as we complete an exciting discovery phase guided by an expert advisory group. This work is made possible through the generosity of a private family donor whose early investment is helping shape CEDAR's future.

Stay tuned as we share the journey.

🚧 PODS Construction Notice!

On Monday, we'll be taking a major step forward on the journey to the Pacific Ocean Discovery Station (PODS) as excavation begins for the building's foundation. Forgive us for being sentimental, but this milestone represents the strong foundation our team, partners, donors, and community have worked so hard to build, and now we're ready to start building a foundation you can see.

For our neighbours, excavation work is expected to generate minimal noise and will continue for the next few weeks. We appreciate your patience and support as we move through this important phase of construction.

We'll continue to keep the community informed throughout the build. All construction notices and project updates can be found on the homepage of www.visitpods.ca.

📢Thank you Coast Reporter, for the splashy feature on our PODS Milestone Event in today’s paper!

On June 16, we gathered to celebrate a major milestone for the Pacific Ocean Discovery Station as the project enters its next phase of construction. With over $10 million invested to make PODS shovel ready, we’re now moving forward with construction.

We were honoured to celebrate with MLA along with community members, colleagues, and partners who share a deep commitment to our coast.

With strengthened partnerships, secured provincial and federal government support, and growing private investment, this next chapter marks a transformative step for ocean research, cultural awareness, and education on the Sunshine Coast. Thank you to everyone helping bring this vision to life.

💙 Today marks the beginning of a new chapter at PODS following yesterday’s special milestone event for the community, as we officially move into Phase Two of the project. It was a beautiful Sunshine Coast day to pause and celebrate the many accomplishments our team has achieved over the past year to bring this project to life.

A warm thank you to everyone who showed up yesterday in support of this milestone. Our hearts were overwhelmed to see so many of the people behind over the years, including former Board Members, volunteers, and colleagues. A special thanks to the Honourable for joining us and sharing her reflections on the project, and to our donors, funders, Board, and staff for their ongoing support.

We can’t wait for the next phase as we continue turning the vision of PODS into reality. Thank you for your support and for being a part of this journey.
