220 years ago today, Philemon Wright defied the nay-sayers with his daring launch of the first square-timber raft down the Ottawa River to Quebec City --on June 11, 1806.

Wright’s bold adventure would mark the beginning of the Ottawa-Gatineau area’s journey to become one of the greatest centres of timber output and lumber production in the world.

Rick Henderson, great-great-great-great grandson of Philemon Wright, takes us back to that remarkable raft trip that started it all:

June 19 is Loyalist Day in Ontario — a day to remember the Loyalist families who came north during and after the American Revolution and helped shape the early communities of what became Upper Canada.

Here in Stormont, Dundas and Glengarry, Loyalist history is all around us: in our cemeteries, churches, family names, farms, villages, riverside communities, and local records.

This Loyalist Day, consider taking a few minutes to connect with that history:

• Visit a local cemetery, historic site, museum, archive, or church
• Share a family story with a child or grandchild
• Look up one Loyalist ancestor or local family name
• Visit the Loyalist information signs along the St. Lawrence in Iroquois and Morrisburg
• Drop by the St. Lawrence Branch Resource Centre — and join us for our book sale on June 20
• Fly the Loyalist flag or display a symbol of Loyalist heritage
• Ask someone in your family what stories, photos, documents, or memories should be preserved

History lives when we share it.

On Loyalist Day, we honour those who came before us and recommit ourselves to preserving their stories for future generations.
