Piviniit Thrift Store Piviniit Thrift Store is a non-profit, volunteer-powered shop reducing waste and poverty in Iqaluit, Nunavut. Every item makes a difference, join us!

We sell affordable, gently used treasures, all donated by our community. Piviniit is now located at Building 778, Fred Coman Drive. We are open Thursday evenings, 6-8:30 pm, and Saturdays, 10 am-4:30 pm. We only accept donations on specific days/times. Please check our most recent Facebook posts for the next available date. Upcycling turns old or discarded items into something better — no new resources, no landfill, just creativity.

Try these at home:
• Turn jars into storage, organizers, or planters.
• Make rags, cleaning cloths, or craft scraps from worn‑out clothes.
• Refresh furniture with paint, new hardware, or simple repairs.
• Get the kids crafting with safe scraps and “junk” materials.
• Trade DIY skills and project ideas with friends or community groups.

🤝 Why buy what you can borrow?

A power drill is used for only about 13 minutes in its entire lifetime. Sharing tools, equipment, and even vehicles means fewer things made, less money spent, and stronger community ties.

Try this:
• Borrow instead of buying when you can.
• Lend what you don’t use often.
• Ask neighbours or community swap Facebook groups before purchasing.
• Share rides and carpool when possible.
• Pass items on when you’re done instead of letting them collect dust.

We will accept:

♻️ When in doubt, check before you chuck — especially up here.

Iqaluit doesn’t have a curbside recycling program, or a recycling depot, and almost everything eventually ends up at the landfill. That makes reuse and smart drop‑off choices our version of “recycling.”

Do this instead:
• Rinse and dry containers before reusing or disposing of them.
• Keep shopping bags and out of garbage where possible; reuse or bring to store drop‑offs if available.
• Break down cardboard and follow City guidance on separation.
• Take scrap metal, appliances, electronics, and tires to the City’s bulky‑recycling/landfill drop‑off.
• Donate clean, usable clothing and household items to Piviniit so they get a second life, not a landfill RIP. 🪦
• When in doubt, ask or look up City waste guidance — one bad choice can create hazards and extra waste for everyone.

Clean choices + thoughtful donations = less waste, more community. 💚

Canadians throw away more than 3 million tonnes of plastic waste every year—and only 9% is recycled. More than one-third of Canada’s plastics are made for single-use products and packaging.

One way to reduce packaging waste is to shop second-hand. Pre-loved items often come without the layers of packaging used for new products. 👕✨

You can also:
• Bring your own reusable bag.
• Refuse wrapping you do not need.
• Choose loose or minimally packaged items.
• Reuse containers and packaging when possible.
• Follow local recycling guidelines.
Less packaging coming in means less waste going out. 💚

Healthy forests, lakes, rivers, wetlands, wildlife, and pollinators all play an important part in the communities we call home. 🌎💚

When we reuse, repair, share, donate, and shop second-hand, we help keep useful items in circulation and reduce the need to extract new resources from the environment.

Circularity is about more than what goes in the recycling bin. It is about making thoughtful choices that help protect clean water, clean air, wildlife habitat, and the natural places we all enjoy.

Electronics and resource recovery

📱🔋 Old electronics still contain valuable materials.

Electronics can contain metals and other materials that may be recovered and used again. Responsible recycling helps keep these resources out of landfill and can reduce the need to extract additional materials from the earth.

Before replacing an electronic item, consider whether you can:
• Repair it.
• Upgrade it.
• Donate it.
• Sell or give it to someone who can use it.
• Recycle it through an appropriate local program.

Do not place electronics or batteries in regular garbage unless local guidance specifically says it is safe to do so.

Making clothing requires water, energy, raw materials, and transportation. The Circular Economy Month website notes that producing the cotton for one cotton T-shirt can require approximately 2,700 litres of fresh water.

One way to reduce that impact is to keep clothing in use for longer:
• Shop second-hand.
• Choose durable pieces.
• Wash clothing thoughtfully.
• Repair small damage.
• Donate clean, usable items.
• Repurpose clothing that is no longer wearable.
• Pass items along through swaps or community sharing.
