We are pleased to share that L’Arche Cape Breton is moving forward with the construction of four new three-bedroom homes at our Iron Mines property. 🏠

For more than 40 years, L’Arche Cape Breton has been a place where people with and without intellectual disabilities live and work together in a spirit of mutual respect, belonging, and community. This next step reflects an evolution of that vision.

These new homes will welcome a mix of people, including members of the wider community such as seniors, essential workers, and individuals seeking affordable, accessible housing. Our goal is simple: to create a neighbourhood that reflects the values we live every day, inclusion, connection, and shared community.

One of the homes will support a Core Member, while the remaining homes will be available for rent, helping to address a real need for three-bedroom housing in our rural area.

These homes are being built by BRELA Homes, who have been wonderful partners in bringing our vision to life.

We are also grateful for the strong early support behind this initiative, including nearly $200,000 in in-kind contributions that have helped prepare the site for the arrival of the homes.

We will continue to share updates as the homes take shape. For those who have expressed interest in supporting this work, thank you. Your encouragement and generosity are helping us build not just housing, but a more inclusive community.

There are so many people to thank for our East Coast Credit Union Chowder Challenge. Our friends' generosity is boundless.

Having said that we do want to give another shout out to our chowder makers. They donate their time and ingredients to make our event. Without them East Coast Credit Union Chowder Challenge wouldn't happen.

So big thanks to our 2026 Chowder Champion Tony Rizzetto. And congratulations to our runners up Leonard van Zutphen and Mill Road Social Enterprises. Thank you to the rest of our line up Pan Cape Breton Food Hub Co-op, The Farmer's Daughter Country Store, STAND & STUFF YOUR FACE, Big Intervale Fishing Lodge, Main Street Restaurant & Bakery, Bill Morrison and the People's Champion Charlene's Family Restaurant.

If they are a restaurant we encourage you to pop in and see them this summer. Let's support our local businesses who give so much of themselves.

And is there a restaurant or individual cook that you think should take the challenge next year? Tag them in this post.

What a night! Our annual East Coast Credit Union Chowder Challenge was another huge success. The Great Hall of the Clans at the Colaisde na Gàidhlig / The Gaelic College was packed, and everyone enjoyed the incredible chowder, great music, lively auction, and plenty of good company.

Huge thanks to East Coast Credit Union, our talented chowder makers, esteemed judges, dedicated volunteers, emcee, musician, the generous auction donors, auctioneer, and everyone who came out and gave so generously.

Congratulations to this year’s winners. The judges awarded first place to Tony Rizzetto, second to Leonard van Zutphen, and third to Mill Road Social Enterprises. Charlene's Family Restaurant took home the People’s Choice award voted on by all in attendance.

Today, we are grateful for the visit from the Lieutenant Governor of Nova Scotia, the Honourable Mike Savage. The rain did not stop us from showing him around and sharing the meaningful things we do in the beautiful place we call home.

Two days to go until East Coast Credit Union Chowder Challenge! We are pumped and this colder weather means some hot chowder is in order.

We wanted to give a shout out to just a few of the many businesses and individuals that make East Coast Credit Union Chowder Challenge happen. Our title sponsor is East Coast Credit Union and they have been our partners for over 20 years. Our Platinum Sponsors are Louisbourg Seafoods, BA Fraser Lumber and Elliot Fraser, Barrister and Solicitor. And there are dozens of other sponsors. Thank you!

And where would we be without our dear chowder makers? They are the stars of the show and we are so grateful they said yes. We have a mix of restaurants and individuals taking the challenge. Joining us this year are Mill Road Social Enterprises STAND & STUFF YOUR FACE Charlene's Family Restaurant Main Street Restaurant & Bakery Big Intervale Fishing Lodge The Farmer's Daughter Country Store Pan Cape Breton Food Hub Co-op Tony Rizzetto, Bill Morrison and Leonard van Zutphen. This afternoon, we had our monthly Community Gathering! Inspired by the value of “Nurture our Gifts and Growth,” we proudly showcased some of the interests of our community members.

We opened with an acted performance of Portia Nelson’s “Autobiography in Five Short Chapters” - a wise lesson in how we learn from our mistakes. Then, we enjoyed performances about David’s communication, Abby’s favourite things, Rod’s passion for music, and what a great day looks like for Jacob and Josh.

To close, Jacques conducted a Popcorn Interview (inspired by CBC Radio) - giving us a glimpse into the life of our Outreach and Communications Leader, Kimani Mwangi! Thanks to all who shared. When we know one another’s gifts, we can help each other to shine.

One of our core values is Nurture our Gifts and Growth. Tonight, we lived it out at our open mic night — full of connection, good vibes, and springtime energy as our community shared their talents. From music to storytelling, it was a beautiful showcase of the gifts within our group. 🎤🎙️🎹🎸

Huge thanks to Bern and Nigar for hosting with humour and keeping us laughing with riddles all evening!

We also celebrated Hilary’s 10th anniversary! 🎉 From House Assistant to House Leader to Office Administrator, thank you Hilary for the dedication and gifts you bring to our community every day.
