The Gulf Nova Scotia Fleet Planning Board is getting ready for the 2025 DFO Halibut Longline Science Survey. We are seeking names and contact information of interested harvesters, with valid ground fish licenses, by Friday, July 25th at 5PM. The draw will take place that evening.

The harvester must make themselves available and prepared to sample at their assigned scientific site within the dates provided. The sampling is expected to take place between August 15 and October 15, 2025. Specific license conditions along with a sampling protocol will be provided.

500 hooks are to be set at the designated location, with a soak time of 4-6 hours. 100% of halibut at the scientific site will be tagged and released. The Captain is expected to cover the costs of crew, vessel, fuel, bait, etc. The Captain will also supply the longlines and hooks as per protocol.

After sampling is completed at the assigned test site, each harvester will be allocated 760kg (round weight) of halibut quota. The fisher is permitted to go to a location of their choice to fish their allotment.

There will be a $1250 fee per participant to be paid to GNSFPB before sampling begins to cover observer costs. An approved observer is required for all scientific trips. Any trip to catch the remainder of the allotment will require regular commercial observer coverage (10%).

There are 8 sites assigned to GNSFPB, highlighted in orange on the attached map. The sites will be assigned based on harvesters' proximity and on the order the names are drawn.
