NO CAMPFIRES (posted: Aug.4.26 7am)

There is a full campfire ban in effect for the entire East Kootenay region.

That means NO traditional wood campfires are allowed.

The use of CSA or ULC approved portable propane fires is permitted at this time provided:
▶ The flame height is less than 15cm
▶ You have established a fuel break
▶ You are present to monitor it
▶ You fully turn it off and allow it to cool before you leave the area

We have had reports of several campfires in various spots in the region and we cannot stress enough the importance of abiding by all fire bans and restrictions.

To report a campfire or open burning violation, call 1 800 663-5555 or (*5555 from a cell phone). You can also file a report through the BC Wildfire app.

To the Citizens and families of the CVMA,

I and the CVMA Board are thinking of you all and our hearts goes out to all of yous in this trying time.

I know this must have been a very stressful few days for everyone. I'm sorry for what you and your families are going through. It's especially frightening not knowing how long the power would be out for.

I pray all your freezers are still cold. Hopefully your fridges faired ok. Or at least you had a great big feast.

I've heard many stories of families and friends getting together during the outage, sharing quality time (with no screens!) and sharing big feasts, which fills my heart ❤️

I have applied to MNBC for an emergency grant, which will hopefully come through quickly and might be able to be used to help refill fridges. More information will come as dobbin as there is some to share.

I would also thank acting President Melanie Jones Allard for personally reaching out Sunday evening to express her concerns and share her prayers for all of our citizens affected by this event. It shows true leadership and care. Kinanâskomitin 🤲

In the meantime, please follow this link for General emergency information and resource links are available at www.mnbc.ca/emergencyinfo.

In the days and weeks to come, mental health supports are available. The Métis Crisis Line provides 24/7 crisis support for Métis in B.C. Call 1-833-638-4722 (1-833-METISBC).

MNBC’s Mental Wellness Coordinators can offer referrals to MNBC relevant programs and facilitate connections with Health Authorities and local programming for additional care and support. Email [email protected] or [email protected] (for youth aged 15-30).

We recognize the devastating impact wildfires have on communities, individuals, and the land. For many Métis, the experience of evacuation can echo the pain of historical displacements. We hold space for this pain while affirming the necessity of evacuation orders for safety. To all those currently away from home, we hope for your safe and swift return.

Pishshapmishko (take care),
And, Big hugs to you all!

Topher Burke
President, CVMA
