In the fall of 2024, the Ingonish Arts & Cultural Society conducted a comprehensive community survey to assess the cultural and historic importance of the Keltic Lodge. The response was clear and resounding: the community overwhelmingly supports the preservation of this cherished landmark.
The survey results, accompanied by a formal letter of support, were submitted to Parks Canada and subsequently forwarded to the Heritage Review Office. Since that time, our Society has remained in ongoing communication with Parks Canada to request updates on the status of the property and to advocate for its preservation. While the review process remains ongoing and information has been limited, the Ingonish Arts & Cultural Society continues to strongly advocate for the protection and preservation of the Keltic Lodge Main Building as a community asset.
In response to recent correspondence from Parks Canada management, we have formally written to the Minister responsible for Parks Canada, urging that the Keltic Lodge be designated not only as a heritage property but also as a National Historic Site of Canada. Such a designation would acknowledge the significant cultural and historic role of the Lodge within the community. The Keltic Lodge itself stands as a tribute to the ancestors who were expropriated from Clyburn Valley for the creation of Cape Breton Highlands National Park and the Lodge. Many of these families—including those of Indigenous heritage—sacrificed ancestral lands, and their descendants remain part of our community today. It is also a symbol of community—a cherished gathering place that has long been the heart of Ingonish, where we celebrate our rich and diverse history through music, culture, and inclusive celebration and community events. As such, the preservation of the Keltic Lodge is directly aligned with Parks Canada’s mandate and duty to protect places of national historic and cultural significance, honouring the stories and sacrifices of those who came before us.
At the September session of Victoria County Council, Golf North management provided an update indicating that discussions are underway between Golf North and Parks Canada regarding a potential modification to the property boundary. This could result in the release of the Keltic Main Lodge from Golf North’s lease. Parks Canada has not yet confirmed this development; however, a recording of the Council meeting may be reviewed here: https://www.youtube.com/live/cIbLVFxjWsM?si=mKIUoiZx9hdEixMl.
The Ingonish Arts & Cultural Society reaffirms its commitment to elevating the voice of the community in this matter. We will continue to advocate for the preservation of the Keltic Lodge as an irreplaceable cultural asset and a vital part of the historic identity of Ingonish.
Thank you for your continued support and engagement.
