Heading out into the community to do the work you’re called to do is a beautiful, sacred thing. ✨

When ISAN was first brought to life in 2021, the entire heart and purpose of that network was to create a supportive space where local Indigenous initiatives could take root, thrive, and come to full fruition and our communities could honor Truth and Reconciliation in all its forms, together.

To see that fundamental vision blooming now across our region is an incredible gift.

Today, I want to use the Building the Fire space to celebrate and hype up two beautiful, local Indigenous-led initiatives launched by former directors. These projects are completely their own standalone visions—conceived, built, and carried by their own hands, hearts, and medicine. I am just so incredibly proud to stand in their corner and cheer them on! 🧡

🦅 Two Row Culture & Community Space
A beautiful new chapter is beginning very soon in Woodstock, and it is the result of the personal heart, prayers, and hard work of Becca Neepinn, who is Bear Clan from Fox Lake Cree Nation. Becca is creating a safe, welcoming, and culturally grounded space for our community to gather, learn, heal, and connect in Woodstock.
She is opening the doors to her space with a New Moon Ceremony on Sunday, June 14th at 12:00 PM (located at 1033 Pattullo Ave, Unit 5 Upstairs, Woodstock).

Because she is building this sacred space from the ground up, she is currently welcoming community support with donations, supplies, and sacred medicines to get started in a good way. Let's wrap some community care around her! You can support by sharing her flyer, donating, or stopping by to check out her Two Row merch and treats.

🌿 Makwa Medicine Ecological Consious Landscaping and Restoration
We also want to give a massive shoutout to a new path born from the passion and dedication of Keegan Marshal-DeSutter, who is Bear Clan from Akwesasne. Keegan is bringing a profound shift to the landscaping industry with his own business, grounding his work in a Two-Eyed Seeing approach.

His vision weaves professional horticulture with a deep, generational respect for the ecosystem. Instead of forcing or disrupting a yard, Makwa Medicine focuses on healing local ecosystems, nurturing native Ontario plants, and caring for the land in a gentle, mindful way.
Keegan is busy laying the groundwork and getting everything dialed in for his official launch next spring. Please head over to the Makwa Medicine page, give it a "Like," and follow along as his vital work grows!

🔥 Keeping the Flame Burning with Building the Fire
As these leaders continue on their journeys and tend to their own fires, Building the Fire remains deeply committed. Guided by my own roots and teachings as mixed heritage Thunderbird Clan Annishnaabe kwe, my dedication to our collective journey is as strong as ever.

I am honored to keep focusing on the heart-work I've been called to do:
🫶Delivering foundational community training and educational workshops.
🫂Working hard to establish a designated outdoor gathering space to bring Ceremony directly to Ingersoll.
🗣Actively advancing Truth and Reconciliation policy in Oxford County through dedicated committee and board participation.

There is so much room for all of us to grow, create, and heal in our own ways. When separate fires are lit across our territories, the whole community gets warmer. Let’s celebrate the incredible gifts Becca and Keegan are bringing forward, and keep building the fire together!

More than a statistic. More than a memory. They are our heart.

Today is May 5th—Red Dress Day. Across this land, red dresses hang empty in the wind. They are visual reminders of the staggering number of Indigenous women, girls, and 2SLGBTQIA+ people who have been taken from us.

In Canada, Indigenous women and girls are 12 times more likely to go missing or be murdered than any other demographic. This is a national crisis rooted in systemic violence and a failure to protect those who hold our communities together.

But statistics can be cold. They can make us feel detached.

We must remember: These are people.

They are the laughter silenced by sexual violence, the futures stolen by human trafficking, and the empty chairs at kitchen tables in our own neighborhoods. They are survivors who carry the weight of what has been lost.

To the Matriarchs and Advocates, We hold a special place of honor today for the strong Indigenous women who advocate tirelessly to ensure this issue is never forgotten. To those who have lost loved ones, who have endured the cruel reality of this violence themselves, and yet continue to stand on the front lines: We see your strength. You turn your pain into power and your grief into a call for justice. You are the fire that keeps this movement alive, and we owe it to you to carry some of that weight.

I speak today not just as an advocate, but as a survivor. I know the shadow of this violence intimately. When we talk about these 'Calls for Justice,' we aren't talking about policy on a page—we are talking about the right to exist without fear. We are talking about the healing of our families.

What does showing up look like?
Commit to the Calls for Justice: Look at the 231 Calls—specifically Section 15 for "All Canadians"—and ask yourself how you can challenge the violence of silence in your own life.

Show Up for the Community: True change happens when we stop looking away and start walking together toward a future where every woman and 2-Spirit person is safe.

We see the survivors. We honor the missing. We fight for the living.

We invite Indigenous youth, ages 15–23, to join us on Wednesday, April 22nd, for a cooking workshop where we’ll be making Indian Tacos and having an open discussion about human trafficking in media and pop culture in a comfortable and welcoming space. 🩵

This gathering, led by the Okaadenige Team at Atlohsa, will explore how movies, TikTok, and other social media platforms can sometimes sensationalize trafficking, while helping youth better understand the differences between stereotypes and real-life experiences.

Okaadenige at Atlohsa Family Healing Services is an Anti-Human Trafficking Program dedicated to prevention, awareness, and support for those who have experienced human trafficking, sexual abuse, exploitation, or who may be at risk. Through outreach and education, we aim to help youth recognize the signs of unsafe situations, build awareness, and feel supported in their choices.

Here’s what to expect:

Boozhoo, Aniin, She:kon, Tansai, Tanshi
Today, March 31st is Indigenous Languages Day.

A day to learn about, embrace, and celebrate Indigenous languages!

Today is also Transgender Day of Visability.

Bonne journée pour les personnes transgenres ê-wîhkwêwêcik

As a way to honor Transgender Day of Visability and Indigenous Languages day I have tried my best to find translations for this in Anishinaabemowin(Ojibwe), Kanienʼkéha(Mohawk), Nēhiyawēwin(Cree), and Michief. Please keep in mind these are not directly translations of the phrase Happy Transgender Day of visability, but rather phrases that celebrate this being a good day to be our authentic selves even if that is perceived as different.
