Tamarack Project Prep In Full Swing At Centreville Academy 🖌

This afternoon, Cameron Lane and Jasmine Easton, who are both working with us for another season this year, went back to their former elementary school to help Mrs. Perry and her Grade 7 Art class! Mrs. Perry was kind enough to ask Cameron and Jasmine to come back and help the kids with their projects for the Open House later this month regarding environmental topics that affect our area. Our staff will continue to help out the school and promote the various aspects of the project as pieces of the project continue to roll out over the coming weeks!

Thanks to Centerville Academy for being so heavily supportive of the project, Mrs. Perry for having IBEC involved on multiple steps, and for Cameron and Jasmine for taking the time to help the kids out!👏

Beaches, History, and Environmental Impacts On The Menu

Yesterday, staff from IBEC joined Centreville Academy students from grades 7 through 9, on a field trip to beautiful, and 🥶, Newtown! The visit touched on the importance of various areas in the community for shorebirds, 👉 out areas the invasive European Green Crab 🦀 could be found, and got a great amount of historical information from a walk around the community and a tour of the Barbour Living Heritage Site! This field trip is part of the larger environmental Tamarack project the school and IBEC are partnered on.

IBEC would like to thank Winse Perry for being our "voice" for the walk out to the bird blind and throughout the town, Wayne Perry for the support and back-up "voice", Steve Perry for the professional tour of the Barbour Site, Mrs. Perry and Mr. Chippett for making the visit happen from the school perspective and being awesome supporters of taking the kids out for this adventure, other staff members for helping out, and the Old Shoppe Restaurant for the great lunch!

Local Students & Environmental Impacts

Yesterday, we had the pleasure of hosting Mrs. Perry and her Grade 7 class from Centreville Academy! During the visit, they learned about what IBEC is and does in the area, European Green Crab 🦀, the difference in polar bear 🐻‍❄️ and black bear 🐻 skulls and behaviors, the affects of climate change in our area, and brainstormed about various ways they as students can make a difference through climate resilience strategies.

This visit is only the start of the partnership between the school and IBEC on environmental actions in our area. A trip to Newtown is in the works, with a visit to the popular bird blind, lessons about the importance of eelgrass habitat for shorebirds, and a tour of the Barbour Site! An Open House at school is also being planned for later next month showcasing student work on environmental topics.

IBEC would like to thank Mrs. Perry and her Grade 7 class for jumping on board with this project and looks forward to continuing this work into the new school year!

European Green Crab 🦀 Research Preparation Has Begun

IBEC will once again be trapping European Green Crab throughout the northeast coast of the island from July through November. Last year, our crews caught over 3,300 crab in various locations within our study area. This year, we suspect we'll be catching even more.

We would like to thank Daniel Blackwood of Greenspond for the donation of herring to use in our bait jars to attract the invasive species 🦀 into our pots. This donation, along with extra bait from last year, will keep us going for the first couple of months at least!

This research is funded through the Aquatic Invasive Species Prevention Fund of the Department of Fisheries and Oceans.

First of Many Runs into the Watershed

Took a run into the Water Nipper Warmup Shelter today with a load of wood (KSA member typing this), did some cleanup around the door, took the garbage out, and checked on water levels and trail conditions!

Water is high on Third Brook and Jim's Steady. If you don't mind getting wet, you'll be able to drive through the area there before the Third Brook Bridge, but the flow is moving along pretty fast. Trail overall isn't bad. Soft spots, areas of snow and water after the 18km mark heading into the country (basically, couple kms after Jim's Steady Bridge). Main Trail from Indian Bay to the bridge is solid. Side of the road is washed out (marked with tape) at bottom of 17 Grade. Some culverts coming up or damaged in towards Moccasin area of Main Trail and further in. Basically, quad and side by sides, no issues, pickups use caution and choose your path wisely.

Researchers From Québec Complete Their Time In Cape Freels

Over the past month, IBEC has had the opportunity to assist two bird researchers from the Universite du Québec a Rimouski who came to the province looking for Snow Buntings! Cape Freels is known as a solid landing spot for Snow Buntings in transit to the north at this time of year.

We were contacted and were able to assist Baptiste and Justine with baiting and trapping sites prior to their arrival. Once on site, we visited them on occasion to learn about their research, trapping techniques, and see Snow Buntings up close! We even had a Newfoundland Breeding Bird Atlas official visit to get in on the excitement!

No birds were harmed in the trapping. Each bird was weighed, tagged, measured, and then released. The team is now onto Labrador to trap more Snow Buntings and continue their research! Opportunities to assist researchers is one of the bonuses working with IBEC has to offer!

IBEC Attends Annual ENGO Summit Conference

Last week, Executive Director Darren Sheppard attended the annual conference along with members from twenty-five other ENGOs and groups from all across the province and eastern Canada. The conference focuses on networking and sharing of ideas regarding environmental actions and results within the province, while discussing issues such as funding, staffing, and community involvement.

Darren had the chance to present to the group about some of IBEC's recent projects and its involvement in helping with organizing the conference! Other groups on the organizing committee includes Aquatic Conservation Initiative, The Fluvarium™, Stewardship Association of Municipalities Inc, Birds Canada Atlantic & Québec, and Nature Newfoundland and Labrador. We also wish to thank the Arts, Wellness, and Heritage Group in Portugal Cove-St. Philip's for hosting us! Great location and people there! And thanks to the Fluvarium for hosting our Open House where around 100 people came by to chat with various ENGOs about what we do, job prospects, and other related topics!
