Grief is…

… an unanswered question – the slightest whisper of words on the wind that fade into nothing but silence.

… an empty house – a knock on a door that is never opened. Echoes of footsteps searching room after room for something they know they will never find.

… a pen with no ink – desperate to keep writing but leaving only imperceptible indents on the paper.

Grief is the remnants of a life lived and loved.

And at first there will be silence and searching and empty pages.

But there will come a day when you realise you can hear the wind again, when the footsteps don’t echo so loudly and when the pen starts writing anew.

And none of it will be erasing what has gone before. You’ll realise that the wind is answering new questions and the footsteps are exploring new places. The pen is continuing the story.

There will still be silence and spaces and pages.

But they won’t feel quite so empty anymore.

Grief has a way of ignoring the timelines we create for it.

It can return on birthdays, in the grocery store, during a song you haven't heard in years, or on an ordinary Sunday when you least expect it. Some days feel lighter. Others can feel just as heavy as the beginning.

If you've ever wondered, “Shouldn't I be further along by now?” this is your reminder that there is no right timeline for grief.

Your love didn't have an expiration date. Your grief doesn't either. You don't need to be “over it.” You don't need to hide the hard days or explain why they still hurt. However your grief shows up today, it is worthy of compassion.

This National Grief Awareness Day, we're honouring every person carrying a loss, whether it happened weeks ago or decades ago.

You don't have to navigate it alone.

The BC Bereavement Helpline is here to offer a listening ear, support, information, and connections to grief resources across British Columbia. Our Helpline is free and confidential.
