About Us

Mamawapowin: Plains Cree word for ‘the act of coming together’.

The Mamawapowin Technology Society (MTS) currently provides over 1.6 Terabytes of free public WiFi data monthly to the Samson Cree Nation at Maskwacis, Alberta. Our network boasts up to 500 clients in an average monthly period as well.

In concrete terms, data sold through mobile providers costs an average of $10 per Gigabyte. The free WiFi access to the Mamawapowin Public network allows its guests an average distributed savings of $32 per user every month. This means an average monthly savings in data of $16,000.

Seriously, we really are that cool. Wander around Samson Nation at Maskwacis and log in to Mamawapowin Public. Check it out. It’s real. For many First Nations communities, this accessibility can allow them opportunities they would not otherwise have.

Mamawapowin Technology Society (formerly Maskwacis Fibre, founded 2016), a registered not-for-profit society, is committed to expanding its network from the Samson Cree Nation to all four Nations at Maskwacis: Ermineskin Cree Nation, Louis Bull Tribe, Montana First Nation.

Many rural First Nations communities have no high-speed internet access at all, or the available internet access is unreliable and cost-prohibitive. This is a barrier to employment, education, civic engagement and cultural connections. We are committed to removing these barriers for all First Nations at Maskwacis.

This is just the beginning. We see this as the first step in the long-term vision for MTS. Our ultimate goal is to provide an example for rural First Nations all across Canada.

Our Nations have a rich cultural heritage and vast reserves of untapped talent to share with the world. The internet is estimated to have over 4 Billion users. 4 Billion people who want to know who we are. 4 Billion potential friends, colleagues, clients, teachers, collaborators.

MTS is dedicated to providing the technology for rural First Nations to bring our talents and innovation to a global audience. We want to provide the network and tools to allow our communities and our youth to gain competitive skills and develop opportunities in an increasingly technological world.

We want to facilitate Mamawapowin for all First Nations of Canada.
