Turning local priorities into practical projects takes people, resources and a shared understanding of what comes next.

On November 26 in Edmonton, EXA Group Canada will launch the 𝗜𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗖𝗮𝗽𝗮𝗰𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗔𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗟𝗮𝗯, a practical workshop for people working to strengthen rural and remote communities.

Together, we’ll work through three questions:

• 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘀𝗵𝗼𝘂𝗹𝗱 𝘄𝗲 𝗽𝗿𝗶𝗼𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗶𝘇𝗲?
• 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗰𝗮𝗽𝗮𝗰𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗽𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗻𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽𝘀 𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝘄𝗲 𝗯𝘂𝗶𝗹𝗱 𝗼𝗻?

This Thanksgiving, 𝘄𝗲’𝗿𝗲 𝗴𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗳𝘂𝗹 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗽𝗲𝗼𝗽𝗹𝗲 𝘄𝗵𝗼 𝗯𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗺𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗲𝘀 𝘁𝗼𝗴𝗲𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿.

This moment was captured last week at Prairie Gardens & Adventures Farm in Bon Accord during the Agritourism Alberta launch. It reminded us how much can begin when 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗱𝘂𝗰𝗲𝗿𝘀, 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗺𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗽𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗻𝗲𝗿𝘀 have a chance to meet and share ideas.

SFRS Beyond the Stars was created from that question.

The concept explores a new model for rural and remote development in the North, where food security, controlled environment agriculture, circular energy and waste systems, tourism, astronomy, learning and community life are 𝗱𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗻𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗼 𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗴𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗻 𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗼𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿.

𝗔𝘁 𝗶𝘁𝘀 𝗰𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝗶𝘀 𝗮 𝘀𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗲 𝗯𝗲𝗹𝗶𝗲𝗳:

Remote communities should not have to choose between resilience and opportunity.

🥕 A 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗿𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗱 𝗲𝗻𝘃𝗶𝗿𝗼𝗻𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗮𝗴𝗿𝗶𝗰𝘂𝗹𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 can support food security.
🔎 A 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗰𝗵 𝘀𝗽𝗮𝗰𝗲 can support education and innovation.
🪕 A 𝗰𝘂𝗹𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗮𝗹 𝗲𝘅𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 can strengthen identity and visitor demand.
🔭 An 𝗼𝗯𝘀𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗮𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘆 can become both a scientific asset and a reason to travel.
🏩 Hospitality can create longer stays, local employment and new revenue.

And when these pieces are planned together, they can 𝗯𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗲 𝗮 𝗹𝗼𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗼𝗺𝗶𝗰 𝗲𝗰𝗼𝘀𝘆𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗺.

Beyond the Stars is still a prototype. That matters.

The intention is to create a framework that can evolve through feasibility, Indigenous and community leadership, partnerships, research and practical implementation.

Because the strongest northern projects will not be imported from somewhere else. They will be 𝗿𝗼𝗼𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗶𝗻 𝗽𝗹𝗮𝗰𝗲, 𝘀𝗵𝗮𝗽𝗲𝗱 𝗯𝘆 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗽𝗲𝗼𝗽𝗹𝗲 who live there and designed for the realities of the North.

For , this is what innovation in rural and remote development should look like: ambitious enough to imagine a different future, practical enough to build it step by step.
