The mornings are getting cooler, the leaves are starting to turn, and outdoor season is shifting gears!

September means…

If you are looking for information to attend a Hunter Education Course, our friends at AHEIA are putting on a 3-day course near Calgary starting August 28. Check out their post for more information.

We are offering an in-class Alberta Conservation & Hunter Education Certification course in Calgary from August 28 to 30, 2026.

Participants must attend all three sessions:

Friday, August 28: 4:30 pm to 9:00 pm
Saturday, August 29: 8:00 am to 4:30 pm
Sunday, August 30: 8:00 am to 4:30 pm

The course will be held at the Calgary Conservation Education Centre for Excellence. The course manual is included, and successful completion of the exam will provide your Alberta Conservation & Hunter Education Certification.

Minimum age is 10. Please bring government-issued identification. Lunch is not provided, but participants are welcome to bring their own.

The Alberta Guide to Hunting Regulations can seem overwhelming the first time you open it. 📖

There are Wildlife Management Units (WMUs), season dates, weapon restrictions, license requirements, maps, and pages of tables that can make even experienced hunters pause.

The good news is that once you understand how the guide is organized, it becomes one of the best tools available for finding new places to hunt and extending your time in the field.

General Licenses Offer Incredible Opportunity. 🏷️
Alberta offers many general hunting licenses that can be purchased each season and used in the WMUs listed in the regulations. Depending on the species and location, these licenses provide excellent hunting opportunities without waiting for a draw.

Archery Opens Even More Doors. 🎯
While rifle opportunities may be limited by draws, many WMUs allow archery hunters to pursue antlered or antlerless mule deer with a general license.
Some archery seasons begin as early as August 25, giving hunters a chance to enjoy warm weather, active wildlife, and less hunting pressure before the busy fall seasons begin.

Early Seasons Can Extend Your Hunting Year. 📅
Some WMUs open for rifle hunting of white-tailed deer on September 1, allowing hunters to begin their season well before the fall rush. Early season hunting offers comfortable temperatures, active game, and a chance to fill the freezer before other seasons overlap.

The Alberta Wildlife Federation is awarding six (6) $1,000 post-secondary scholarships to help support Alberta students working toward careers that protect our province's fish, wildlife and habitat.

Our friends over at Okotoks Fish & Game Association are holding their annual fundraiser banquet on Saturday September 26, 2026. Tickets are on sale now via emailing the address on the poster.

Tickets to our 5th Annual Banquet and Fundraiser are now available. The banquet will have a new look this year with a Fall Dinner theme including a buffet meal of turkey and ham with all the trimmings. There will also be a selection of wild game dishes donated by our membership. This menu will appeal to a wide audience and in order to accommodate a larger crowd we have moved it to the Viking Rentals Centre in Okotoks. The event will be a little more casual than previous years with a western wear dress code and children are welcome to join in.

The banquet is being held on Saturday September 26. Doors open at 5:00pm, with dinner at 6:00pm. We'll have some silent auctions, possibly a live auction, raffles and displays. Adult tickets are only $75, and kids 12 and under are $50. Seating will be pre-assigned, so you can be sure you'll get a seat with your friends and family. A cash bar will be fully stocked with locally sourced spirits.

Tickets can be purchased online by sending an eTransfer to [email protected]. Please include your contact info in the eTransfer so we get all of the information we need.

Tickets can also be purchased in person with cash by attending one of our ODFGA events or by emailing [email protected] to arrange a meet up.

We expect this to be a sellout, so get your tickets fast. Our ODFGA members and previous banquet attendees get access to a short pre-purchase period to buy priority tickets now, but we’ll soon open it up and advertise to the general public.
