Honouring Our Heroes: International Firefighters' Day 🔥🚒
Today, on International Firefighters’ Day, the Rural Municipality of Headingley extends our deepest gratitude to the brave men and women who serve as firefighters — especially those on our own Headingley Fire Department.
These dedicated individuals put their lives on the line to protect our community, often at great personal risk. Whether it's responding to fires, accidents, medical emergencies, or natural disasters, they show up with courage, professionalism, and an unwavering commitment to keeping us safe.
To all current and former firefighters — thank you. Your service does not go unnoticed, and your sacrifices are deeply appreciated.
Let’s all take a moment today to recognize and honour the incredible contributions of our firefighters. If you see one, be sure to say thank you!

Today, on International Firefighters Day, we honor the selfless dedication of our firefighters at the Headingley Fire Department.

Our firefighters are always ready to drop what we’re doing, day or night, to respond when duty calls. Whether it’s a fire or a medical emergency, we come running from our homes, jobs, and everyday lives to help. We don’t sit in a station waiting; we serve because this is our community, and these are our neighbours.

At HFD, we’re more than a department - we’re a team, a family, and a lifeline when seconds matter. With 18 Firefighters, and 13 dual trained Firefighter/EMR, they face every challenge with strength, teamwork and an unwavering commitment to keeping our community safe.

Through sweltering heat, bitter cold, blistering winds, and everything in between, Manitoba's weather doesn't slow them down; it only highlights their resilience. And their impact goes beyond emergencies. You'll find our members at local events, connecting with families, educating kids about fire safety, and supporting the very people they're sworn to protect.

To our members and firefighters everywhere: thank you for standing strong, for protecting lives and property, and for always being there when it matters most.

It's not always easy, but it's the hardest work that doesn't feel like work.

Tonight’s Training: HFD was honoured to welcome three heroes from for a presentation 🚁⛑️. They also brought along a very special guest - 🐾

It was incredible learning first-hand from the crews pilot, flight nurse, and flight paramedic!

When we require STARS, time is critical. From the time they are dispatched, we have ~10 minutes before they are within our line of view. Our crews are trained to get up a STARS Landing Zone, a 120’x120’ square and to communicate with them on a special simplex channel. The corners of the landing zone should be illuminated. Crews must wear appropriate PPE while landing the helicopter to protect them from flying debris, snow/dust, gravel, etc.

We learned that STARS has excellent night vision goggles that turns pitch-black conditions into, essentially, daytime! People often think they need to illuminate the landing zone for the helicopter with scene lights, headlights, etc., but it actually makes it harder for them to land. And there are only two reasons why STARS will not be dispatched: fog and ice. Even Headingley’s 80km/h wind speeds can’t keep the away!

Thank you for the unique opportunity to learn from you today! Give Orion a big rub for us😍
