The Elders Caring Shelter is celebrating our 10th year anniversary of changing lives of our homeless Elders by providing a safe culturally sensitive environment with affordable and accessible housing.

The Elder’s Caring Shelter, built by Metis Nation of Alberta Local Council #1990 (Metis local 1990) of Grande Prairie, Alberta is a Society and operates under the direction of a Board of Directors, and was incorporated under the Alberta Societies Act on March 25, 2003. (Corporate Access Number: 5010392925)
The Metis Local 1990 Elder’s Caring Shelter has been in operation since June 2003. With the help of community organizations, businesses, and many volunteers, we have managed to house as many as 18 homeless people at one time. We have been at full capacity for the past year and will continue to operate with a maximum amount of residents as long as the shelter is needed, and we are able to continue offering services and shelter to the homeless men and women over the age of 55 years old. The homeless situation in Grande Prairie is an issue that affects every citizen in our community. Metis Local 1990 has opted to become part of the solution by developing programs and services. One of these services is our Elder’s Caring Shelter. The shelter operates on a very small grant from the Alberta Homeless Supports. This grant only provides half of the funds needed to operate the shelter. Approximately 25% comes from minimal rent from residents. The balance of the budget is compensated by fundraising and donations from businesses and organizations in the community of Grande Prairie. The Metis Local 1990 Elder’s Caring Shelter of Grande Prairie Society provides shelter to the homeless and/or at risk of being homeless Elders and Seniors. We house up to 18 residents and staff living on-site. Donations are readily accepted; please contact manager, Benita @ 780 882 7242.
