Out of the blue, a lone male transient Orca (T54) surfaced just meters away from the Lab. He surfaced four times before taking a long dive and disappeared to the west leaving us all in awe of this unexpected visit.

Early yesterday morning, members of the A24 and G3 matrilines were visiting Campania Sound. Their beautiful calls alerted us to their presence at 515am and we were on the water shortly after. The whales were travelling north until they almost reached Ashdown Island, then quickly turned around and headed back towards Caamano Sound. It was a beautiful flat calm morning, the group of 20+ Orca were very social with each other and we were able to catch a glimpse of a breach of A78.

Land based whale research is extremely rewarding when whales come close to you and you have no impact on their lives! This humpback was feeding just meters away from the shore directly underneath the Lab and allowed us to get this incredible close up image.

A beautiful start to our 2026 season. Fin whales and humpback whales are already returning to Gitga’at waters. We can’t wait to see what this year has in store for us and the whales who call this area home.

A first recording of NRKWs in the new year. The A34s vocal in Campania Sound for about 3hours. There was no boat noise interfering with their calls, it was magical to listen to.
Eventually the whales travelled north in Squally Channel close to the Campania Island shoreline.
