Violence Prevention Labrador

Violence Prevention Labrador VPL aims to prevent violence by addressing root attitudes and behaviours that foster violence, in turn encouraging safe and respectful Labrador communities.

Encourage Equality, Respect and Dignity to End Violence in Labrador! Violence Prevention Labrador is a Pan-Labrador Coalition including volunteers from like-minded organizations, Government Departments and community partners from all over Labrador. Through education, awareness, and community capacity building we're working together to change attitudes and behaviors that foster violence and encourage respect, dignity and equality in Labrador communities.

Yesterday marked the beginning of pride month in Happy Valley Goose Bay with the Town’s Pride Month proclamation and flag raising at Town Hall in partnership with Safe Alliance.

Pride month is a time to celebrate diversity, inclusion, and the many contributions of 2SLGBTQIA+ people throughout our communities.

We believe that every person deserves to be treated with dignity, respect, and kindness. Strong communities are built when everyone feels welcomed, valued, and supported.

Thank you to the Town of happy Valley Goose Bay and Safe Alliance for helping recognize the start of Pride Month.

🏳️‍🌈🏳️‍⚧️Happy Pride Labrador!

In light of recent tragedies and losses across Labrador, we want to gently remind community members that Fireweed Counselling Collective offers free, low barrier counselling support for individuals and families impacted by gender based violence, sexualized violence, relationship violence, grief, trauma, and related harms.

We know that violence and loss ripple through entire communities. You do not need to navigate that alone.

Our roster includes counsellors offering virtual support across Labrador, as well as some in person options depending on location and availability. Participants can access up to 15 free counselling sessions, with flexibility for additional support when needed.

If you or someone you know could benefit from support, you can reach out confidentially at www.fireweedcounsellingcollective.ca

With care,

Gender–based violence can happen in the workplace, too.

Unsafe comments, coercion, intimidation, and harassment can create harmful power dynamics and unsafe environments. Let’s continue the conversation about respect, safety, and accountability.

Today, on Red Dress Day, we take time to honour and remember Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls, and Two-Spirit people.

In Labrador, this loss is deeply felt within our community, our relationships, and the stories folks carry. We hold space for remembrance, grief, and care in whatever ways feel right for you.

The ongoing crisis of violence requires coordinated action from governments and systems that ensures Indigenous voices are centered.

The 231 Calls to Justice from Reclaiming Power and Place: The Final Report of the National Inquiry into Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls (https://www.mmiwg-ffada.ca/final-report/), crafted from the truths and lived experiences shared by survivors, families, and Knowledge Keepers, remains a critical roadmap for accountability and systemic change.

As a member of the Provincial Action Network on the Status of Women, we also continue our call for the establishment of a resourced and community-led Provincial Gender-Based Violence Task Force.

🚨 Community Alert + Friendly Reminder 💜

A toxic drug alert has been issued after a dangerous synthetic opioid was found here in our community (Happy Valley–Goose Bay).

Thank you to RCMP Newfoundland and Labrador for sharing this information so we can all stay informed and look out for one another.

We know people use substances for many reasons. Right now, it’s especially important to know that some pills may look like prescription medication but can be far more potent and unpredictable.

At Mokami, nasal and injectable naloxone kits are available to people of all genders, for free, anytime. No questions asked. No judgment.

We are here 24/7, 365 days a year at 43 Grenfell St. Just ring the bell at our centre entrance (door next to Thrifty’s entrance) and our team will be there to help.

Want to learn how to use Naloxone or connect with harm reduction supports? Reach out to our Peer Support Worker:

Gender based Violence can take many forms, including gaslighting and cohesive control.

These behaviours are not always easy to recognize, but they can have a serious impact on a person’s sense of safety and well-being.

Understanding the signs is an important step in supporting those affected and fostering safer communities.

A few moments from the final days of the Labrador Winter Games — and from this past week.

The Games may have wrapped up, but the conversations about care continue. We’re still out in our communities sharing Respect buffs, and hearing stories about how people show up for one another.

Care doesn’t belong to a single event.
It lives in our everyday moments — in how we support, encourage, and look out for each other across Labrador.

Thank you to everyone who shared a story, a reflection, or simply taken a moment to connect.

Respect — because how we treat each other matters, especially when we gather.
Care grows in community.

Congratulations to all the athletes, and to everyone who helped make these Games such a proud moment for Labrador.

Over the past week we witnessed so many moments of care, kindness, and community. Thank you to everyone who shared their stories of care with us — it was truly a privilege to hear them.

As people return to their communities today, we hope everyone is making it home safely.

At Violence Prevention Labrador, we believe that care is prevention. When we show up for one another, we build stronger and healthier communities.

Let’s keep this conversation going — we would love to continue hearing your stories.

Labrador cares for Labrador — and over the past week, you have shown the strength that comes when we stand together.

We will keep working to get your buffs out to you 💜
