WHAT IS SPARK? Spark is a new MSU service designed to help first year students successfully transition into life at McMaster. This program will help prospective students develop hard and soft skills needed to thrive at University through weekly sessions led by upper year mentors. These sessions will be geared towards providing students with small g
roup environments that facilitate first-year growth, and build personal development and reflection skills for their undergraduate career. As well, it is used as a way to introduce first year students to campus services, clubs, and leadership opportunities and encourage extracurricular participation. Spark is also an awesome way to connect students to their peers and upper-year students to promote increased support on academic issues and associated first year challenges. You definitely won't be sorry about getting involved with Spark. HOW DO I GET INVOLVED? Registration is open for all First Year students who are members of the MSU. Signing up is totally free, and easy to do. Spark will be running two programs during the year; one for each term. Term one registration will be begin late August, open until after Welcome Week, and sessions will start the third week of September. HOW ARE THE SESSIONS STRUCTURED? Each Spark group will contain 8-12 first year students, and two upper-year Team Leaders. Each week, groups will meet for roughly 1-2 hours, and run through a session designed to help with specific soft skills, such as academic success, personal development, or community. Sessions may consist of anything ranging from leadership activities, speaker presentation, discussions, games, or adventures.
