Cancer Assistance Program The Cancer Assistance Program is a community-based, not-for-profit organization offering free services for individuals living with cancer.

The Cancer Assistance Program (CAP) is a community-based not-for-profit organization that provides free services for individuals affected by cancer. Services are practical in nature and are intended to create access and remove barriers to care, improve day-to-day quality of life and reduce the financial impact associated with a cancer diagnosis. Services fall into four categories:

1. transportati

on to and from cancer-related medical appointments;
2. loans of home health equipment – as many pieces as required for as long as necessary;
3. access to parking for appointments taking place at the Juravinski Cancer Centre (JCC) and Juravinski Hospital; and
4. personal care and comfort products including monthly issuances of oral nutritional supplements and adult incontinence products as well as the provision of wigs and alternative head coverings, breast prostheses and mastectomy bras. Transportation support is available exclusively for residents of the greater region of Hamilton. All other services are available for residents of the greater region of Hamilton as well as surrounding communities. Charitable Registration # 14026 2759 RR0001

🍎 Back to school looks a little different when you’re retired!

As students and teachers head back to the classroom, recently retired teachers, educational assistants and school staff might be wondering: What’s next?

If you have a little extra time in your schedule and are looking for a meaningful way to stay connected to your community, consider volunteering with the Cancer Assistance Program.

Our volunteers are the front lines of our organization, providing direct support to people living with cancer in our community. We couldn’t do what we do without them!

We’re currently recruiting volunteer drivers to help individuals get to and from cancer-related medical appointments throughout the greater area.

A cancer diagnosis affects more than a person’s physical health. Anxiety, depression, trauma and emotional distress can arise during treatment and can continue long after treatment has ended.

In this episode of the Cancer Assist Podcast, Dr. Bill Evans welcomes back Dr. Karen Zhang, a clinical health and rehabilitation psychologist and psychology lead at the Juravinski Cancer Centre. Together, they explore why cancer-related mental-health concerns are so common, why they are often overlooked and how they can look different from anxiety or depression experienced outside the cancer setting.

They also discuss medical trauma associated with complex treatments, barriers to accessing specialized support and VISTA, a virtual psychiatry program helping cancer patients receive timely, specialized mental-health care regardless of where they live.

At CAP, we understand the importance of wigs for cancer patients. Beyond simply covering hair loss, wigs play a crucial role in reclaiming dignity and helping individuals feel at ease in their own skin once again. By offering free wigs, we aim to alleviate some of the emotional burden that comes with hair loss, allowing our clients to focus on their journey towards healing.
