Many years ago some pins and charms were ordered by the WCCH from a jeweller in Ottawa. A dozen of them remained. With the demise of the WCCH the pins were offered to the Women's Ottawa Women's Canadian Club and sent by Canada Post. The pins/charms will be appraised and sold with the proceeds supporting the Club's bursary & scholarship programs. Last Friday one of the 10K gold pins was given to the Governor General, Her Excellency Mary Simon at Rideau Hall as she completed her 5 year mandate. A reception attended by over 400 of her supporters was held. Governor General Simon was the patron of the Ottawa Women's Canadian Club. How wonderful that a pin originally purchased by the WCCH has been shared with the King's representative in Canada.

“Since 1965, the Maple Leaf has stood as the symbol of a strong, diverse, and ambitious country. It flies over our diplomatic missions and military operations around the world. It is worn by members of the Canadian Armed Forces who defend our sovereignty and protect our freedoms. When people around the world see the Maple Leaf on a sleeve of a uniform or the back of a truck, they see hope. They get help.

In a more dangerous and divided world, the Maple Leaf is a salient reminder that Canadians are strongest when we are united.

On this Flag Day, the Maple Leaf flies at half-mast on Parliament Hill and across Canada for the people of Tumbler Ridge. As the community endures the unimaginable, our flag carries a message from an entire nation in mourning: all of Canada is with you. We will always be with you.”

Prime Minister Mark Carney

Today we remember, celebrate and say Thank You!

On this day in 1929, the Famous Five won the Persons Case, affirming that women are “persons” under Canadian law. 🇨🇦

Persons Day reminds us how this milestone helped shape Canadian society as reflected in the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms, including Sections 15 and 28, which guarantee equality for all.

We celebrate the courage of the Famous Five and their lasting impact on gender equality in Canada.

"Over the course of my career, I have seen meaningful progress being made in Canada as we continue on the path towards reconciliation.

This year marks an important turning point in our history, as it is the 10th anniversary of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada’s Final Report. The stark truth about the residential school system and the stories bravely shared by Survivors in the report’s six volumes sparked a national awakening. Since then, research into missing children and unmarked graves has deepened our understanding of the trauma Indigenous peoples continue to carry.

Many schools are embracing inclusive history. More and more initiatives across Canada are making space for Indigenous children to learn and speak their ancestral languages. Governments are working with Indigenous communities to address systemic issues and bolster self-sufficiency. Relationships are being renewed, grounded in respect and dialogue.

But much work remains. Denialism and discrimination persist. Many Indigenous communities are striving to heal from generational trauma while struggling to meet basic needs.

Today, I encourage all Canadians to renew their commitment to reconciliation. We have the tools and the knowledge.

Let’s keep building a country where all peoples—Indigenous and non-Indigenous—can truly thrive and face the challenges ahead." -
