We are looking to potentially expand the MSU’s Student Health Insurance to include better support for trans and gender-diverse students.
This new insurance package would include coverage for gender-affirming surgeries not covered by OHIP, financial support for travel and accommodation costs for gender-affirming treatments, and free legal assistance for gender and name changes.
We’ve created a form to hear from trans and gender-diverse students and community members. Our goals from this form are to
1. Hear from trans students about their experience with gender-affirming surgeries and medical procedures (particularly around their cost and positive impact) and identify if there is a need for expanded coverage
2. Collect stories to advocate for the need (if identified) of this coverage. Expanding our student health insurance would require a vote by the student body through a referendum (likely in January) to make the change for the 2027-28 school year. This form would support campaigning efforts around this referendum
This form is open to McMaster students, McMaster alumni, students from other institutions, and all trans and gender-diverse community members! Please share this form widely as we are hoping to gather as much input as possible!
