It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Sister Vindra Maharaj-Seegobin on Monday, April 27. Vindra was a longstanding member of the Millwright Regional Council and an active member of Millwright Local 1916 for over 10 years serving as our Sisters in the Brotherhood Chairwoman. She was a pioneer for women in the trades and a mentor to all who knew her and had the privilege to work alongside her, or had the opportunity to have a conversation with Vin . Her kindness, dedication, and warm smile will be deeply missed.

The 2026 UBC Tax Fraud Days of Action begin today.

Tax fraud in construction hurts workers, responsible contractors, and Canadian communities. When contractors avoid paying taxes, EI, CPP, and benefits, it creates an uneven playing field and takes money away from the public services we all rely on.

Over the next two weeks, the UBC Councils across Canada and the United States will be visiting jobsites, training centres, and meeting with government to raise awareness about the impact of tax fraud in our industry.

Responsible contractors deserve a fair playing field. Workers deserve fair wages and safe jobs. Communities deserve the tax revenue that builds schools, hospitals, and infrastructure.

It is with a heavy heart that we announce the sudden passing of Brother Jaden Taormina on March 31, 2026, at the young age of 22.

Jaden was a remarkable young man with a very bright future ahead of him at Millwright Local 1916. Those who had the pleasure of working alongside him had nothing but the highest praise for his character; he was someone everyone truly looked forward to seeing on the job site.

He brought a great attitude to every task and possessed a genuine hunger to learn. Jaden fully embraced our philosophy that "training is employability," recently reaching a proud milestone by passing his horizontal CWB test.

Jaden made a lasting impact on everyone who knew him. His presence will be incredibly missed by his brothers, sisters, and friends within the union.

Tax fraud hurts workers, undermines fair contractors, and costs Canadians billions every year.

That’s why the Millwright Regional Council is proud to support the Tax Fraud Days of Action (TFDoA) - a coordinated effort to raise awareness and push for accountability in our industry. When companies cheat the system, they put responsible contractors at a disadvantage and threaten the jobs, training, and safety standards that union millwrights fight to uphold.

We’re standing together to say enough is enough. Fair work deserves fair rules and fair enforcement.
