Circle of Friends for Newcomers Circle of Friends provides a friendly, homelike learning environment. North. Babysitting services were offered to give women an opportunity to attend classes.

We are like one big family and we provide English classes to adult immigrants, teach about Canadian culture and different themes. Circle of Friends for Newcomers was organized by a group of concerned people in 1980 as a response to the numbers of South-East Asian refugees (“boat people”) arriving in Canada. To assist in the settlement of these government assisted refugees (GAR), members representi

ng government and community agencies, formed a committee to recruit and train volunteers to assist newcomer families. Early in 1981, the committee initiated English classes in the basement of the apartment complex at 151 Queen St. Circle of Friends very quickly extended its services, especially the English classes, to include all new immigrants-men and women of any ethnic background.

Job Description: Monday to Friday 9am to 11:45am. Monday to Friday. Can become a full-day position.

REPORTS TO: LINC Coordinator

RATE OF PAY: To be discussed at interview

JOB SUMMARY: Circle of Friends for Newcomers requires a Part-time LINC Teacher for the Language Instruction of Newcomers to Canada program to instruct a CLB 2 class of English to adult language learners from around the world.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Provide English language instruction to adult newcomers to Canada

Prepare lesson plans according to the LINC and PBLA guidelines

Possess the ability to engage learners with prepared lessons

Develop and maintain an anti-bias classroom atmosphere where participants feel welcome and interested in learning

QUALIFICATIONS:

TESL Certification from a recognized institution is a must

Excellent and innovative lesson planning skills

Demonstrated experience working with adults of diverse cultural backgrounds

Computer skills with the knowledge of ESL/LINC educational software, MS Word, Internet

Ability to work independently with solid time management and organizational skills

Experience in instructing Canadian Language Benchmark Levels from Literacy to CLB 2

Knowledge of the LINC Curriculum Guidelines and the Canadian Language Benchmarks

Knowledge of Portfolio Based Learning

Must be punctual, reliable, disciplined, professional
