The Stoney Creek Chapter meeting will be happening June 23 at 6:30 PM at Dominic Agostino Riverdale Community Centre (150 Violet Drive) We will be discussing tenant organizing and updates on our local to national campaigns. We will also be having our chapter board election where are full members can vote and run for a position! This will be a great time to meet other members in the neighbourhood. Let’s get organized Stoney Creek!

No clean water at Fernbrook Resort - and the landowner has offered no support yet!

Since May 25, ACORN members and residents at Fernbrook Resort (57 Concession St E) have been living under a boil water advisory while Linwood Parks has failed to provide bottled water or a solution.

Residents are demanding:
-Portable drinking water for all residents
-A clear timeline for restoring safe water
-Compensation for the loss of this essential service

Access to clean water is a human right.

"I’m talking today because my apartment has three different temperatures," said Pauline Roberts, a downtown resident and member of tenant advocacy group Hamilton ACORN, to the committee. "My living room is 32 C. My bathroom is 40 C. My bedroom is between 36 and 40 C."

Roberts said she recently had a stroke and can't easily walk to cooling centres the city provides during heat warnings.

"It’s very hurtful to come back here three years later to be doing this again. How many times do we need to come here, stand before city councillors and staff and ask them to do the right thing and protect us?"

Update from June 16 Planning Committee:

ACORN Hamilton members hosted a 50+ person press conference in front of City Hall to oppose the city’s delay of reporting back on maximum heat bylaw recommendations.

Thank you to all the ACORN members and allies that attended our press conference and delegated to the Planning Committee yesterday! 👏🙏

Council passed a motion in 2023 for the City of Hamilton to develop a “maximum heat bylaw” to protect tenants from extreme heat in their apartments. The bylaw would be similar to the existing property standard that requires a minimum heat of 20 °C between September 15 - May 15. ACORN wants to see a maximum temperature set of 26 °C all year round.

Yesterday instead of the expected report back, staff shared that the recommendations for the committee would be moved to September 29th 2026. ACORN strongly opposes any delays that would risk the bylaw not being drafted this term.

At the committee we had 10 ACORN members delegate (7 in person, 1 pre recorded video & 2 written) along with 4 allies (Environment Hamilton, Canadian Environmental Law Association, HCBN & Chris Heidebrecht). Members gave passionate delegations about the impacts of extreme heat in their homes and why we need Council to get a bylaw on the books this term.

Despite push back from some Councillors - the delay till September was received. 👎

Next steps -ACORN leaders will report back to their chapters, connect with allies, reach back out to city staff and get ready for the September committee meeting. The fight for a max heat bylaw continues!

“Hamilton has declared a climate emergency, this problem isn’t going away, it will only get worse,” Leet added. “Cities have to step up and figure this out.”

ACORN's East End Chair spoke to the spec about the June 16 Planning Committee report that would delay the report back on the max heat bylaw till Sept 29.
