Dear Friends,
It is with deep sadness that we share the news that our beloved friend, Alice Jean Hewer, has passed away. While her passing was sudden and unexpected, we are pleased to share that she was surrounded by friends in her final days and moments.
Alice has been a member of our community for over 40 years and a pillar at Sherman House, where she welcomed so many.
We have so many fond memories of Alice, such as her contagious laughter and penchant for mischief, often starting water fights and playing harmless pranks on her friends. She loved to make people laugh and considered slapstick humour the best kind.
Alice had epic dance moves and, especially in her younger years, was known for tearing up the dance floor. Equally as memorable are her signature catchphrases, such as βOh, great!β βSheebie!β βThatβs crazy! βOh, there it is!β and so many more, which easily made their way into our everyday vernacular.
Of course, we canβt speak about Alice without mentioning the flicker that was always in her hand (and often dispersed throughout the home, in the van, and just about everywhere she went!) Assistants often spoke of finding pieces of string even in their own belongings, always bringing a chuckle.
One of the greatest gifts Alice brought to our community was her unparalleled empathy. She had a gift for seeing others' emotions, even when people tried to conceal them, and was always there to comfort and show love in challenging times. She was equally as quick to join in their laughter and celebration in good times. Alice was so affectionate and often showed it through cuddles, gentle pinches on the nose, and invitations to sit and be present with her. She held many long-term, meaningful relationships and impacted people in a profound way. Her love and legacy will continue to live on in our hearts and memories.
Today, we gathered as a community to remember Alice, and a Celebration of Life will be held at a later date. All are welcome to join us as we celebrate our friend Alice. We will share the service details once they are confirmed.
We invite you to share your memories and stories of Alice - moments of laughter, kindness, or simply time spent together. By sharing, we help each other remember the special person she was and find comfort together.
Please hold our community, and especially the members of Sherman House, in your prayers as we process this immense loss.
With Love,
Sarah Tuck
