In 1995, Dolly Parton started the Imagination Library to inspire a love of reading in children, in honour of her father who never learned to read or write. The idea was simple: every month children aged 0-5 would receive a free age-appropriate book delivered to their home. At this early age, time spent reading a book with their parents sparks a love of reading, develops vocabulary and early literacy skills, and prepares them for kindergarten. Over the years, her program grew, and by 2026, the Imagination Library will have delivered over 325 million books to children.
Dolly will be remembered as an amazing singer, songwriter, and actress, but her commitment to childrenās literacy was unmatched. We have seen firsthand the positive impact the Imagination Library has made on kids in our own community.
While our hearts are incredibly sad today, weāre more inspired than ever to continue this important mission. Together, we are building a brighter future for our children.
