When Robert Land School closed in 2004, Don MacVicar and caring community members from Hamilton’s North End rallied together to transform the former school into a much-needed community resource centre, now known as the Eva Rothwell Centre.

Without Don’s vision and leadership, this building and the Centre’s 20 years of impact and success would not have been possible. His unwavering dedication and deep passion for the North End laid the foundation for what the Eva Rothwell Centre is today. Don’s commitment to children, youth, and families has inspired generations and transformed countless lives. Through his leadership and belief in the potential of the community, hundreds of children and families have found hope, opportunity, and support.

We are profoundly grateful for Don’s legacy, and for the difference he continues to make through the Centre he helped create.

In 1995, Dolly Parton started the Imagination Library to inspire a love of reading in children, in honour of her father who never learned to read or write. The idea was simple: every month children aged 0-5 would receive a free age-appropriate book delivered to their home. At this early age, time spent reading a book with their parents sparks a love of reading, develops vocabulary and early literacy skills, and prepares them for kindergarten. Over the years, her program grew, and by 2026, the Imagination Library will have delivered over 325 million books to children.

Dolly will be remembered as an amazing singer, songwriter, and actress, but her commitment to children’s literacy was unmatched. We have seen firsthand the positive impact the Imagination Library has made on kids in our own community.

While our hearts are incredibly sad today, we’re more inspired than ever to continue this important mission. Together, we are building a brighter future for our children.

As we are approaching the end of summer, we would like to take a moment to express our heartfelt gratitude to City of Hamilton Norman Pinky Lewis and Mission Services of Hamilton for their generous support of our summer camps.

Thank you for providing our campers the opportunity to cool off and enjoy the swimming pool, followed by a well-balanced lunch! Your annual contribution has helped make our summer camps a fun and memorable experience for everyone.

We are truly grateful for your continued support and for helping us make this summer a special one! šŸŒžšŸŠā€ā™€ļøšŸ’™

Here at the Eva Rothwell Centre our child & youth programs have always been the heart of the work we do. As part of our 20th Anniversary celebrations our Program Manager, Jordan Bailey, sat down with some of our Summer Campers to find out straight from the source what the Eva Rothwell Centre means to them.

Thank you to these awesome kids for sharing your thoughts. We are having the best summer hanging out with all of you! ā˜€ļøā¤ļø
