This is something you otter know about! 🦦

May 27 is World Otter Day, so let’s celebrate our otters! Swipe to learn more about Southern Ontario otters. That’s right! Southern Ontario has a native species of otter called the Northern River Otter (Lontra canadensis).

Alt text:

Slide 1 : title reads "world otter day, May 27, 2026"
Three photos of different otter show.

Slide 2: Photo of a river otter stands on a mossy bank next to tall grasses with its reflection visible in the water. Text reads, "Celebrating Our Otters! We Have Otters? Yes! Southern Ontario has a native species of otter called the Northern River Otter (Lontra canadensis)"

Slide 3: Educational graphic about Northern River Otters, illustrations of wetland plants and a pond. The top section asks “Where do River Otters Live?” and explains that Northern River Otters live in complex rivers, freshwater wetlands, and lakes. A second section asks “River Otters in the Hamilton Watershed?” and states that present and future stewardship could welcome Northern River Otters back to Cootes Paradise.

Slide 4: About wetland stewardship and Northern River Otters. The title reads “Wetland Stewardship Potential.” The graphic explains that in 2020, Royal Botanical Gardens staff spotted and photographed a Northern River Otter in Hendrie Valley. A photograph in the centre shows an otter swimming in the water, credited to Sarah Richer. Additional text explains that the otter’s return may be connected to factors such as the salmon run, cleaner water quality, sustainable policy, habitat restoration, and wetland stewardship.

Slide 5: Reference page on a pale green background with black otter footprints near the top. The heading reads “References.” Three sources about river otters and biodiversity are listed, including articles from Royal Botanical Gardens Canada, the Toronto and Region Conservation Authority, and the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation, along with their website links.

We're heading to Barton and you're invited to come dig in with us!

Join Green Venture’s Urban Garden Club as we care for the gardens we have helped to create along Barton Street. This time, we will be at Barton Library to tend to gardens that used to be concrete!

🕰️ HISTORY CHECK!
Back in 2023, Green Venture teamed up with Hamilton Public Library, the Barton BIA, and the GALA Community Planning Team to rip up hard surfaces and make room for this garden. Now they need a little love to keep growing strong!

🌿 What We Will Do
Remove invasive plant species.
W**d the garden beds.
Pick up litter.
Aerate (loosen) soil to boost below-ground biodiversity.

Looking for an opportunity to....
🦋 Learn about native plants and pollinators
🤝 Connect with fellow garden and nature lovers

Details:
📅 Wednesday, June 3
🕔 5:00 PM – 7:00 PM
📍 Barton Library, 571 Barton St. E., Hamilton
