Something as simple as singing, clapping or making music together can create opportunities for a young child to explore, connect and learn.

This Giving Tuesday, help us bring music education to newcomer children at IWC.

IWC is looking for your support to raise $6,000.00 towards this initiative. Help us bring music to 60 kids as they take their first steps toward a bright future.

🧡 Every Child Matters

Today, September 30, staff from all four IWC locations wore orange for the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation and Orange Shirt Day.

We honour First Nations, Inuit, and Métis Survivors of residential schools, their families and communities, and we remember the children who never returned home.

Orange Shirt Day began in 2013 in Williams Lake, British Columbia, inspired by Phyllis Webstad. Her new orange shirt was taken from her on her first day at residential school. Today, the orange shirt represents the loss of culture, freedom, and self-esteem that so many Indigenous children endured.

As an immigrant-serving organization, we each have a role in this journey. Many of us, and many of the newcomers we serve, are still learning about the history of this land. Remembering, learning, and sharing that knowledge are important steps toward reconciliation.

This year, our shirts were purchased in support of the Niagara Regional Native Centre. We wear them big: for the heart, not for the size.

📍 In person and online, one team, one message.

On Wednesday, September 17, IWC staff had the pleasure of attending an event hosted by HIPC at the Central Library as part of Newcomer Welcoming Week. It was a wonderful opportunity to connect with newcomers to our city and share information about the programs, and resources available in the community to support their settlement and integration journeys. It was wonderful to connect with so many community organizations and, most importantly, to have meaningful and engaging conversations with newcomers. Together, let’s continue the great work of making Hamilton a welcoming place to live, work, connect, and thrive! 💙 Congratulations to HIPC on another successful event!

A conversation. A shared experience. A moment of feeling understood. Sometimes, that’s where belonging begins. 💛

From September 10–19, we’re celebrating and this year’s theme, “Stories We Share: The Courage to Connect.”

It takes courage to start again in a new place, share your story, or reach out to someone you haven’t met. Each connection helps build a Hamilton where everyone feels welcome and valued.

At Immigrants Working Centre, we see how welcoming spaces help people find support, build friendships, and feel part of their community.

💬 Who helped you feel welcome when you first arrived? Share your story in the comments or give a shout-out to someone who made a difference.

July – August 2026 ☀️ IWC was a bee-hive of summer activity! 🐝🌻

This summer, informal language learning and well-being activities brought newcomer women, girls and families together to connect, learn, grow and thrive. Through Community Connections programming, funded by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC), participants took part in a vibrant range of activities, made possible with additional funding from valued community partners:

🌍 Informal Language Learning & Global Health Project – participants practiced English, built connections and took part in a meaningful global health activity, made possible with funding from Zonta.

🌱 Grow What You Want to Feel – a peer support circle creating space for connection, reflection and well-being, made possible with funding from WAWG.

🥕 Newcomer Women’s Gardening Group – growing food, friendships and community together, made possible with funding from the City of Hamilton.

💪 Girls Moving: What Helps Newcomer Girls Be Active? – exploring movement, wellness and what helps newcomer girls stay active, made possible with funding from Co-Play.

🌟 Youth Thrive – building skills, confidence, connections and positive pathways for newcomer youth, made possible with funding from Hamilton Community Foundation (HCF).

From conversation circles and global health activities to gardening, peer support and youth wellness, IWC was buzzing with opportunities to learn, connect and grow together!

💚 A heartfelt thank you to our participants, volunteers, community partners and funders for helping make these summer experiences possible.

🌟Hamilton Connector Program Has Arrived

Hamilton is Connecting Talent with Opportunity!
We are proud to announce the launch of the National Connector Program in Hamilton, led by the Immigrants Working Centre (IWC) — the first organization in Hamilton to bring this national initiative to our community.
The Connector Program helps newcomers build meaningful professional networks by connecting them with established professionals, employers, business leaders, and community leaders in their field of interest.

How does it work?
A Connector meets with a newcomer (Connectee) to share their knowledge, experience, and connections. The Connector then introduces the Connectee to at least three people in their professional network who may be able to provide further guidance, connections, or opportunities.

Through these conversations, newcomers can:
✔️ Build professional networks
✔️ Learn more about Hamilton's labour market
✔️ Gain industry insights and career guidance
✔️ Discover employment and professional opportunities
✔️ Develop meaningful connections within their community
📣 Hamilton Professionals — We Need You!

Are you an established professional, business leader, employer, entrepreneur, or community leader in Hamilton?

Become a Connector and help open doors for talented newcomers in our community.

Your network could be the connection that makes a difference in someone's career journey.

The Hamilton Connector Program is part of the National Connector Program, a Canada-wide initiative helping newcomers build professional networks and strengthen their connection to their communities.

📩 Interested in becoming a Connector or learning more about the program?
Contact the Immigrants Working Centre to get involved.
Together, we can connect talent, build networks, and strengthen Hamilton's workforce.
