Hamilton and District Labour Council and Partners Launch SAVE ONTARIO Provincial Priorities
Hamilton, ON – On Monday, February 10th, the Hamilton and District Labour Council (HDLC), in collaboration with its affiliate and community partners, was pleased to launch Save Ontario. These key priorities will form our activist efforts for future Members of Provincial Parliament (MPPs) to address the needs of workers, families, and communities in Hamilton.
The launch featured speakers from the CUPE 7800 (Hamilton Health Sciences), the Hamilton Wentworth Elementary Teachers Local, the Social Planning Research Council of Hamilton, ACORN Hamilton, and Environment Hamilton.
Save Ontario is comprised of the following key priorities:
Save Our Lives - 20% increase to public healthcare staffing.
Save Our Kids - 20% increase to Grants for Student Needs.
Save Our Families - $20/hr minimum wage. Double OW/ODSP.
Save Our Homes - Establish cost-share agreement with all levels of government on geared-to-income housing.
Save Our Services - Increase provincial corporate tax, marginal income tax on high incomes, and rates on Capital Gains.
Save Our Planet - Increase Greenbelt and other natural protected areas.
“Doug Ford has embraced hypocrisy by deeming himself Captain Canada and flailing to try and protect the country while we need a plan to save Ontario from the Ford government.” said Anthony Marco, President of the Hamilton and District Labour Council. “Hamiltonians are suffering from sustained cuts to our public services while huge corporations are raking in billions from working class families.”
The labour council has launched a webpage at www.saveontario.org and will invite people to sign on, share their support, and keep updated on efforts to bring these priorities to the next provincial government.
