On June 3rd and 4th, will be hosting their IDEA Leadership Conference, presented by .nurses. This year, the conference will be exploring intersectional paths to equity in urban and rural communities.

In the morning session, BACCC Manager Jesse Elders will be delivering a presentation anchored by the findings generated from our Community Equity Workshops in 2025., focusing on
how some of the most powerful and scalable responses to climate change already exist in small cities, neighbourhood hubs, and informal community networks.

That afternoon, BACCC Staff will facilitate the Resilientville climate simulation game as designed by .

Collective impact is about solving complex challenges through shared goals, aligned action, and long-term collaboration.
It relies on five key conditions: common agenda, shared measurement, continuous communication, mutually reinforcing activities, and a strong backbone organization.

For climate action, this kind of coordination is essential. No single organization can solve a systems-level issue like climate change alone.

Swipe to explore what collective impact looks like in practice — and why backbone organizations play such an important role in making it work.

The Hamilton Harbour Remedial Action Plan (HHRAP) is a powerful example of how complex environmental challenges can be addressed through long-term collaboration, shared accountability, and coordinated action.

Originally created to help restore Hamilton Harbour after decades of environmental damage, HHRAP has become an important example of collective impact in practice — and it helped shape the concept behind BACCC’s regional model for climate action.

Swipe to learn more about how HHRAP was built, why it worked, and why its legacy still matters today.

BACCC was founded on the idea that climate action in the Bay Area must be coordinated, collaborative, and regionally grounded.

From its early foundations in 2017 and 2018 to the development of a Theory of Change and strategic priorities over time, BACCC has worked to bring community partners together and turned ambitious climate goals into action.

National Model Codes set the technical foundation for safer, more efficient buildings across Canada.

But provinces decide how these codes are implemented.

Ontario’s proposed approach has sparked debate about how much flexibility municipalities should have to adopt stronger building standards and support local climate goals.

Understanding building codes helps explain how policy decisions shape the future of our communities.

What’s new in Canada’s 2025 National Model Building Codes?

The latest update introduces stronger measures to improve energy efficiency, climate resilience, and building performance. These include limits on operational emissions, future-focused climate data, and a tiered pathway toward net-zero energy-ready buildings.

Building codes may be technical, but they play a major role in shaping how our homes, workplaces, and communities respond to climate change and energy use.

In the next post, we’ll look at how provinces adopt these codes — and what Ontario’s approach could mean for municipalities and local climate goals. Stay tuned!

How are buildings regulated in Canada—and why does it matter for climate action?

Canada’s National Model Codes set the baseline standards for how buildings are designed and constructed. They help ensure buildings are safe, accessible, and energy efficient, while also shaping how communities adapt to climate change.

These codes act as a blueprint for provincial building regulations and influence how homes, workplaces, and infrastructure are built across the country.

In the next post, we’ll look at what’s new in the 2025 National Model Codes and how they support climate resilience and energy efficiency. Stay tuned!
