For too many young people, a lack of transit means missing out on opportunities, friendships, and experiences. Get On The Bus is breaking down those barriers by helping communities make public transit accessible and free for youth, so no one is held back by how they get around.

If your community or organization is ready to help remove barriers and build a stronger, more connected community, visit Get On The Bus to learn how you can get involved.

Burlington began by offering youth transit during evenings and weekends.
As the program demonstrated value, it expanded.
We can help municipal leaders start with a thoughtful pilot, learn from it, and
expand over time.

Halifax’s youth transit program grew to serve approximately 30,000 students across 59 schools.
Survey responses show the program supports independence, access, and community
participation.
Some of the strongest infrastructure investments are the ones that help people use the community around them.

🚌 Success! HRM students keep their free transit pass.

When Nova Scotia announced a funding cut for the Student Transit Pass Program earlier this year, thousands of youth, parents, and educators spoke up to save the program. And it worked! This fall, Grade 7-12 students across Halifax Regional Municipality will keep access to free transit through a new funding partnership.

Thank you HRM for showing what the power of a community coming together and creating a collective voice does.

What does the future of transit look like?

It looks like youth feeling confident navigating their communities.
It looks like agencies listening, innovating, and collaborating.
It looks like shared learning across Canada.

That’s why Get on the Bus is compiling youth engagement best practices and recognizing standout initiatives with our Youth Engagement Best Practice Seal of Approval.

Now we want to hear from YOU!

If your community has created a program, pilot, or idea that helps young people connect with transit we'd love to showcase it and inspire others.

Visit the link in our bio to explore the growing collection.

Your story might just inspire another community to make their change.

Kingston, Halifax, Burlington, Ottawa, and North Bay all started from different places. But they all share something in common: more of their youth have access to public transit.

We're here to help you learn from other communities so you can build the program that's right for your community, without starting from scratch.
