What happens when neighbours who have lived near each other for years finally get the chance to really connect? đź’›

Rachel and Dave recently hosted the first Good Neighbour gathering for the Edmund Street neighbourhood in Weston Village, Toronto.

24 neighbours — about one-third of the neighbourhood’s households — came together for a potluck, conversations, activities, and a chance to get to know one another beyond a simple hello.

By the end of the gathering, neighbours had shared stories, talked about what being a Good Neighbour means, made a commitment to support one another, and connected through the Good Neighbour App.

Sometimes, building a stronger community starts with something as simple as getting around the same table. 🏡

What does feeling safe in your neighbourhood mean to you?

In Dieppe, Giselle has been working with immigrant youth in partnership with MAGMA in Moncton to explore that question.

The youth identified safety as an important issue in their community — and they’re now thinking about how they can bring parents and other adults together to build stronger relationships between neighbours.

Because feeling safe isn’t only about where we live.

It’s also about knowing the people around us, building trust, and knowing there are neighbours we can turn to when we need them.

We’re proud to see young people helping shape what being a Good Neighbour can look like in their own community.

Something exciting is happening. 🌱

From Weston Village in Toronto, to Dieppe and Moncton, and now Bible Hill in Nova Scotia, neighbours are beginning to come together in new ways.

Tina is preparing to host a neighbourhood gathering in Bible Hill to begin building stronger connections within the community.

And what has surprised us most?

The idea is already travelling.

Without big campaigns or lots of promotion, people in nearby neighbourhoods are hearing about Good Neighbours and asking how they can bring the same idea to where they live.

That’s the kind of growth we believe in — one neighbour, one relationship and one community at a time.

In Dieppe, Giselle has been working with immigrant youth in partnership with MAGMA in Moncton to explore what being a Good Neighbour can look like in their community.

The youth identified safety as an important concern and are now exploring how they can bring parents and other adults together to build stronger relationships, trust, and connection between neighbours.

It’s inspiring to see young people helping shape stronger, more connected communities, and reminding us that neighbourhood change can start with a conversation.

What really matters is what happens. What happened in Weston Village Toronto is that Rachel Rainbow and Dave Bennett kicked off the Good Neighbour Project by hosting a shindig on their own street. It was more than a potluck, or a neighbourhood gathering, it involved neighbours actually meeting and getting to know each other for the first time. It involved neighbours talking about being Good neighbours and whether they wanted to make the commitment to be Good neighbours with each other. The universal answer was yes, we want to be Good neighbours, Lets get together once a month and build our supportive relationships with each other.

And as what happens when people get exposed to the Good Neighbour Method, people on neighbouring streets say they want this too. And that is exactly what happened. It's already starting to spread outward. And that is how we shift the culture of a community so it is normal for neighbours to know, care about and support each other. And that is how we are going to make Good Neighbours normal all across Canada

October 1 | National Seniors Day 🇨🇦

A supportive neighbourhood is one where everyone feels seen, valued and connected — at every age.

On National Seniors Day, we celebrate the older adults who enrich our families and communities with their knowledge, experience and contributions. đź’™

Building age-friendly neighbourhoods means creating communities where seniors can feel safe, connected and supported — and where neighbours look out for one another.

Let’s make sure our neighbourhoods are places where everyone can thrive, today and for generations to come.

**Neighbouring may be one of the most important things we can do for our safety, health and happiness.**

Kate has taken a brilliant idea and put it into action: the **Department of Neighbouring**.

Life happens through relationships — with people, places, nature, culture, and the communities around us. Yet we rarely have a space dedicated to strengthening those connections.

As Kate says, **“A neighbour is a noun. Neighbouring is a verb.”**

Her work is about creating stronger relationships and helping communities care for one another.

My biggest hope is that politicians and communities everywhere can be inspired by what Kate is doing.

Because a stronger society starts with how we treat our neighbours.

**Welcome to the Department of Neighbouring.**

Once upon a time there was a forest fire and all the animals gathered by the lake for shelter. As they looked up, they saw a single hummingbird dip its beak into the lake and fly back towards the fire.

They asked – humming bird what are you doing. The response “ I am doing what I can to put out the fire”

This inspired the other animals and together they put out the fire.

We have a fire burning in Canada – the fire of loneliness, isolation and the mental health and anxiety that comes with it.

I and the Good Neighbour Team are mere hummingbirds in the face of this fire. We are doing what we can. By joining in our efforts, together, we can make it normal for neighbours to know, care about and support each other, making us all healthier, happier and stronger.

**THE HUMANITY OF COMMUNITY IN AN INHUMANE WORLD**

Sometimes being a Good Neighbour means much more than helping someone who lives next door.

Mostafa’s journey to safety took him through unimaginable hardship. Along the way, ordinary people took extraordinary personal risks to help him — eventually helping him reach Canada, where he was welcomed by a community that continues to support him as he rebuilds his life.

I have personally met Mostafa and some of the people who helped him. He is a gentle man who is slowly regaining his ability to trust, thanks to the kindness and courage of people who expected nothing in return.

We are all human, but we don't all experience the same safety, opportunities, or privileges — even when we live across the street from one another.

Perhaps being a Good Neighbour is simply seeing someone who needs help and choosing to help, without expecting recognition or reward.

Anika (not her real name) came to Canada to go to school. As I told Anika the Good Neighbour Story where we do not make any one special, we include all people as neighbours who simply want to be accepted as a person without labels - the story brought up emotions with her. She told me this is all she wanted, just to be accepted as an ordinary person and how lonely she feels being excluded. That is why she has joined Good Neighbour Builders as one of our many professional volunteers. She wants other people of difference to be included in their neighbourhood as just another Good Neighbour
