EAC's Kelp Kurious program is taking the processing of freshly harvested cultivated kelp to new heights (with the tallest kelp our team has ever seen)!
We're testing out drying methods such as air hanging and using The Chopin Mobile (a custom designed mobile dryer by Thierry Chopin and Steve Backman) for various types of kelp and for different products. We're also testing grinding methods with a hammermill.
These tests will help us understand how much capacity mobile dryers like this one can offer to sea farmers. We are also looking at improving energy efficiency to help with processing times and costs.
As with all our work, the results of these and EAC's future trials will be made publicly available to benefit everybody in the sector.

Vid 4: The dried kelp being ground in this video is much smaller, skinnier and lighter in colour than the Digby County kelp in the previous photos and video. This kelp was grown for the Kelp Kurious project on Indian Point Marine Farms in Mahone Bay, which has a lower nutrient and turbulence profile than the conditions that yielded the Digby County kelp.
