Many of the hard-won environmental victories we’ve seen throughout Halifax’s and Nova Scotia’s history have been due to incredibly passionate work of community members and organizing groups campaigning to protect their communities. Now more than ever, we need to make our voice loud and clear to the powers that be to stand up for what is right and just.

But... where on earth do you start?

This 3-hour workshop will introduce you to a few core concepts of community organizing and campaigns, including:
Strategies
Storytelling
Team building
Ladders of engagement
Taking action

This introduction might be interesting to anyone who is getting started for the first time in a campaign or local community group, or for anyone who has been in a group for a little while and wants to sharpen their thinking and skills.

By the end of this intro workshop, we encourage you to start your own grassroots campaign, or join an existing one in the HRM! 🌎

Chris Benjamin, co-chair of the Affordable Energy Coalition [and senior energy coordinator with the EAC], told the committee energy poverty in Nova Scotia is among the highest in the country.

“Two out of every five households in the province are struggling to keep up with their energy bills,” Benjamin said.

Benjamin said while existing programs provide important relief, they are fragmented and difficult for some people to navigate. His coalition is proposing a new Home Energy Assistance Program that would automatically connect applicants to multiple supports, including efficiency upgrades and rebate programs."

Since this story ran, Premier Houston has stepped down as Energy Minister. This is welcome news, but the more important issue is that while Nova Scotians are struggling to afford their energy bills, the Home Energy Assistance Program is still collecting dust. We're calling on the new Energy Minister Marco MacLeod to adopt this program and finally provide meaningful support to the nearly 40 per cent of Nova Scotian households dealing with energy poverty.

Every year, we marvel at the miracle of spring. And every year, we’re reminded how deeply connected we are to the ecosystems that sustain us.

That connection is what inspired two long-time supporters to step forward with a generous $20,000 donation, hoping to inspire others like you to join them in protecting the nature, democratic processes and communities we all care about.

Their message is simple: you are not alone in caring deeply about our world 🌍🌻

Today, we’re asking you to build on the generosity of these donors and help us match their $20,000 contribution into a collective $40,000 investment in climate, nature and our shared future. If you care about nature, democracy, clean energy and the future of our communities, visit ecologyaction.ca/donate to make a donation today.

Thank you for standing with us and with each other 💚

Last month, the Carney government announced a slew of proposed changes to federal environmental laws. These changes would rollback decades of hard-won progress and safeguards - safeguards that protect our communities and environment from bad 👎projects.

You can submit feedback on these proposed changes up until Sunday, June 7.

Your voice matters 🙌.

"...although this is a positive step forward, it is a minuscule step forward. Citizen groups from across the province have nominated a number of areas to the government's collaborative protected area strategy and none of them seem to be here in this list."

-Raymond Plourde, senior wilderness coordinator with the EAC

On Wednesday, the Nova Scotia government announced the creation of a new nature reserve in Digby County, as well as the expansion of two existing reserves and seven existing wilderness areas. Combined, these will protect roughly 8.4 square kilometers of forests, lakes, and wetlands. The government has also opened public consultations on 13 proposed new or expanded wilderness areas and nature reserves.

This is welcome but underwhelming news for Nova Scotians working to protect the natural ecosystems we love and rely on, but if the Houston government intends to make good on its legal requirement to protect 20 per cent of our lands and waters by 2030, they're going to have to pick up the pace.

"Expanding again into offshore oil and gas is a major step backward... We have climate targets we need to meet and better economic alternatives to pursue that aren’t a finite and volatile resource, such as offshore wind.

I would rather a project, even a renewable project, take a longer time because it is ensuring people’s health and environmental safety are a priority over getting it done for the sake of shareholders and billionaires."

-Badia Nehme, energy coordinator with the EAC

Last week, the federal government announced a change in the way offshore oil and gas drilling in Nova Scotia will be regulated. These changes could mean less safeguards, less proper consultation and paving the way for short-sighted projects that threaten our climate, fisheries and ecosystems - all to enrich the billionaire-backed fossil fuel sector.
