The Public Impact Award, sponsored by Research Nova Scotia, recognizes applied research that delivers measurable economic benefits while addressing a defined need in the province by solving a problem, managing a risk or enabling application.

Tick-borne diseases are an important challenge for people and animals. At Acadia University, researchers and industry partners are working on new tick-control and repellency technologies.

Research Nova Scotia is supporting this work through a $1.2M Focused Research Investment. The goal is to help move promising research beyond the lab and toward practical applications and commercialization.

Ticks are a growing concern in Canada, and researchers at Acadia University are getting up close with them to better understand the risks they pose! 🕷️

Dr. Nicoletta Faraone and her team at the Canadian Tick Research and Innovation Centre are collecting, breeding and studying ticks to better understand the diseases they carry.

Their work was recently featured on CBC’s Quirks & Quarks.

Six Opportunity Space applicants have been invited to submit full proposals through Research Nova Scotia’s Focused Research Investments (FRI) program.

Opportunity Spaces are the sector-level challenge(s) limiting economic growth, where research is needed to advance solutions.

The selected applicants have been invited to develop full FRI proposals responding to their Opportunity Spaces.

The applicants are working on Opportunity Spaces focused on:

▪️Responsible small-scale critical mineral exploration
▪️Coexistence of the offshore wind and fisheries industries
▪️Alkalinity enhancement for marine carbon removal
▪️Kelp cultivation and product development
▪️Turning waste methane into renewable energy
▪️Determining the technoeconomic feasibility of offshore wind farms

Two to three proposals will be selected for FRI funding. Full proposals are due November 10, 2026 with funding decisions expected in early 2027.
