Chebucto West Community Health Board

Chebucto West Community Health Board We are a volunteer advisory board that advocates & participates in creating healthier communities from Halifax West to Hubbards

Community Health Boards represent an important link between citizens and the health care system. Legislated by, Bill 1, Health Authorities Act, the Boards are mandated to carry out key functions to ensure our health system is responsive to community health needs. Every three years the Community Health Boards are expected to develop a community health plan for their zone. They do this by consulting

with people and organizations about their views on how to improve the health of individuals and how to create social and physical environments that promote health. The Boards also consider information about their population's health status and demographic profile. This information, along with community views, is used to develop recommendations for the community health plan. The Nova Scotia Health Authority is mandated to consider these plans in their health-services business plan. Another important role of the Community Health Boards is to work in partnership with a broad range of community groups and organizations to support them in their efforts to build a healthier community. Community Health Board members recognize that many factors influence the health of individuals and their communities, e.g. income, education, healthy child development, culture, social support, personal health practices, coping skills, social status, employment, physical environments, inherited factors, and the availability of health services.

If approved, the proposal would see the site designated as the future “Herring Cove Backlands Wilderness Area”. Centered around the lower McIntosh Run, it accounts for more than 37 per cent of the overall Backlands. The parcel would add a critical piece of provincial Crown lands and waterbodies into permanent protection. 🤩

Nova Scotia has a new nature reserve protecting wetlands, forest and migratory bird habitat in Digby County.

The designation of the Toy Makers Marsh Nature Reserve was announced today, May 27, along with two expanded nature reserves and seven expanded wilderness areas. Together, they protect 836 hectares of Nova Scotia’s land and water, and 5.2 kilometres of its coastline.

The Province also opened consultation on 13 proposed new or expanded wilderness areas and nature reserves.

If approved for designation, the proposed sites will protect an additional 1,946 hectares of land and water. Four of the sites open for consultation were purchased by the Department using federal funding under the Canada-Nova Scotia Nature Agreement.

Nova Scotians can share their thoughts on the proposed new designations at https://www.novascotia.ca/nse/protectedareas/ until July 28.
