College of Pharmacy alum Natalie Borden (BScPharm94) has spent more than three decades building an extraordinary healthcare career. Now, she’s supporting the next generation of African Nova Scotian pharmacy students in their pursuit of a rewarding career in healthcare with the Natalie Borden Scholarship in Pharmacy.

“The message I want to send to African Nova Scotian students with this scholarship is that you can do it; you are as smart, as capable as anyone else. It’s just that sometimes, our environments aren’t always inclusive, and we may experience financial barriers to success. But that doesn’t define who we are, or what we can do,” says Borden.

On June 26th, Her Excellency the Right Honourable Louise Arbour, Governor General of Canada, announced 61 new appointments to the Order of Canada — including three Dalhousie alumni.

The Honourable Mayann Francis (LLD’16), honorary degree recipient, was the first African Nova Scotian to serve as Lieutenant Governor of Nova Scotia. Corinne Sparks (LLB’79, LLM’01), the 2020 recipient of Dalhousie’s Weldon Award for Unselfish Public Service, was Nova Scotia’s first African Nova Scotian judge and Canada’s first Black woman on the bench. And Kona Williams (BSc’04), is the first First Nations forensic pathologist in Canada.

Congratulations to these distinguished alumni!

In honour of their class’s 50th anniversary, members of the Pharmacy class of ’74 came together to restore an aging class photo display. Alumni Rita Caldwell (BScPh’74, MHSA’94) and Mary MacCara (BScPh’74) led the project to repair and replace the damaged and missing photos in the Burbridge Building display.

They set up a fund for the display’s repairs and revitalization, and fellow members of their graduating class generously donated to help the project come to life. With additional support from Dal Archives and Dal Managing Director of Creative Services Paul Williams, they spent a year revitalizing the display.

Thank you to Rita, Mary and the Pharmacy class of ’74 for your wonderful contributions to preserving decades of pharmacy history at Dal.
