Tenants shouldn't have to live with tape holding their windows together while landlords sit on repair requests for months or years.

This is exactly why ACORN is organizing the Fix Our Rentals Forum on September 21st.

We're bringing tenants from across HRM together to talk about the conditions we're facing and how we can fight for real accountability from landlords and HRM.

📣 HALIFAX — the Fix Our Rentals Forum is coming up!

We’re getting ready for a BIG meeting of tenants from across HRM on Monday, September 21st at 6PM at the Halifax Central Library.

We’ve been hearing more and more about pest problems, neglected repairs, mold, broken amenities, and landlords leaving tenants waiting months or years for basic fixes.

Now we’re bringing those issues together and talking about what HRM can do, what needs to change with the Rental Registry, and how ACORN is organizing to make it happen. We’re also inviting City Councillors to join us and hear directly from tenants.

We need a strong turnout to show HRM that tenants are organized and ready to fight for better rentals! ✊

🏆 Bayers Park got its Rotten Rental Award — and there's more to come from ACORN! 👀

On Saturday, 30+ ACORN members came together at Bayers Park Apartments to put a spotlight on the conditions tenants have been forced to live with: mice and cockroaches, mold, leaks, broken elevators, unfinished repairs, and water shutoffs that leave people without water for hours.

ACORN members shared their experiences, brought the whole community together, and presented Universal Properties with a very special “Thirsty Mouse Award” for the long-running problems at Bayers Park. 🐭🏆

After the action, members delivered a demand letter to management calling for a meeting with Universal Properties CEO Mani Suissa.

But Bayers Park isn't the only building where tenants are being left to deal with rotten conditions.

That's why we're fighting to FIX THE RENTAL REGISTRY. HRM needs to stop simply registering rental properties and start using the program to actually identify problems, enforce standards, and hold landlords accountable.

This cockroach was photographed yesterday while ACORN was doorknocking at Bayers Park Apartments. Unfortunately, it's just one example of the conditions tenants have been dealing with alongside repeated water shutoffs, neglected repairs, mold, elevator issues, and more.

Tomorrow, we're presenting Universal Properties with a Rotten Rental Award and sending a clear message: tenants deserve better.

This isn't just about one building. Across HRM, too many renters are living with the same problems while paying higher and higher rents. It's time for the city to Fix the Rental Registry and give it the teeth needed to hold negligent landlords accountable.

🎉 ACORN had an AMAZING time marching in this year's Natal Day Parade! 🎉

Our members decked out a car with ACORN flags and signs, handed out flyers all along the parade route (and ran out just as the parade wrapped up!), and were met with lots of cheers and support from the crowd. One member even overheard someone say that ACORN was the most important part of the Natal Day Parade—we couldn't ask for a better compliment! ❤️✊

A huge thank you to everyone who marched with us and helped spread the word about tenant power. And a special shoutout to Dartmouth ACORN Chair Tim Allenby for providing his car so members with mobility challenges could join in the fun. 💚
