STATEMENT: Public investments 💰 in energy efficiency must not only reduce emissions and energy costs, but also reduce energy poverty and protect tenants, ensuring that federal incentives are not used to raise rents and evict tenants via RENOVICTIONS.🏡🚫

The federal announcement is for $2 billion for home energy retrofits, including new heat pump rebates and financing for apartment building retrofits. There are large problems ⚠️with no requirement to protect tenants from rent increases, above-guideline increases (AGIs), renovictions or displacement ‼️

ACORN is demanding that we are immediately consulted to avoid this incentive creating mass RENOVICTIONS in many provinces. For example we saw investments by the CIB in Alberta in 2023-24 lead to evictions. We need assurances that tenants will actually benefit from lower energy costs and improved living conditions! 📣

Today, ACORN members stood in solidarity with NS labour unions and the Nova Scotia Federation of Labour to defend the right to strike.

When workers’ rights are under attack, we stand together. ACORN stands with our union allies!

🔥 80+ TENANTS PACKED THE ROOM FOR ACORN’S FIX OUR RENTALS FORUM! 🔥

On Monday night, ACORN members and neighbors from across HRM came together at Halifax Central Library to talk about the rental conditions we’re facing and, more importantly, what we can do together to change them.

We had 80+ people in the room, 4 City Councillors, CTV News and Dalhousie Gazette there to hear what tenants had to say.

ACORN leaders Miriam Williams and Tim Allenby shared what tenant organizing has already won, while powerful testimonials from ACORN members Angela, Skarlet, and Carolyn put a face to the problems tenants are dealing with across HRM.

We also laid out the next step in our campaign:

🏠 WE WON THE RENTAL REGISTRY. NOW LET’S GIVE IT TEETH.

We’re fighting for:
🔎 More proactive inspections
🟢🟡🔴 Public building grades
📣 Better tenant education and access to 311
💰 A stronger program funded by landlords

And the night didn’t end with just talking.

A flurry of new members signed up to get involved with ACORN, and tenants came together in groups to talk about how we can build power in our buildings and neighbourhoods.

🏚️ HOW LONG WOULD YOU BE EXPECTED TO LIVE WITH THIS?

A floor destroyed by mould and water damage.

For too many tenants, the answer is: months. Sometimes years.

ACORN members are organizing because tenants shouldn’t have to keep chasing landlords for basic repairs, live with deteriorating conditions, or wonder when someone is finally going to fix the problem.

And when the systems meant to protect tenants aren’t catching these problems early enough, something has to change.

That’s what we’re talking about at the ACORN Fix Our Rentals Forum this Monday.

We’re bringing tenants from across HRM together to talk about what’s happening in our buildings, what needs to change with the Rental Registry, and how we can organize to make sure our homes are actually being maintained.

City Councillors are being invited too. We want them to hear what tenants are dealing with.
