Listen to Mainland ACORN leader Heather Dunham share her experience living with landlord neglect in her building 😡 absolutely SHAMEFUL that tenants are being forced to live in these conditions! This is why ACORN is fighting for better enforcement of HRM's property standards and real accountability for landlords who neglect their properties! ✊

Roaches don’t pay rent—and tenants are tired of living with them! 😡

Today, Nova Scotia ACORN members gathered outside 550 Herring Cove Rd to call out the rampant pest infestations and repair issues tenants are dealing with in Spryfield and across HRM 📣

🏚️ Members shared stories of living with cockroaches, mice, ignored repairs, leaks, and mold—all while rents continue to rise year after year 📈

🙌 Chants echoed through the neighborhood as passing cars honked in support, and we saw awesome media turnout from The Canadian Press, Global News, the Halifax Examiner, and CBC!

📢 ACORN leaders Heather and Mariah spoke out about the unacceptable housing conditions too many tenants are still facing, and made it clear: we should not be paying more to live in worse conditions.

✊ We also reminded the city that ACORN members fought for years to win the rental registry—but without strong enforcement, landlords are still getting away with neglect.

💥 We’re going to keep organizing, building pressure, and showing up until landlords are held accountable and everyone has a safe, healthy home.

"Whether tenants living in these homes have lived there for 1, 5, or 30 years, they call this neighborhood home."

📣Check out Peninsula ACORN spokesperson Darryl King's speech at the HRM Transportation Standing Committee meeting last week!

ACORN members across NS are fighting to protect affordable housing and tenant rights 💪. If council continues to move forward with the demovictions on Robie Street, they should create a follow up plan for tenants being displaced by the Robie Street widening project so these tenants can remain housed! ✊

🔥 We aired the province’s dirty laundry today—and we’re not done yet!

Nova Scotia ACORN members took action in Halifax to call out rising power bills and demand fair energy for all ⚡

🧺 We set up a “clothesline” and hung up real power bills—some in the hundreds and even thousands of dollars 😡—to show just how out of control things have gotten.

📣 With a strong turnout, powerful stories, and chants like “NS Power for NS People!”, we made it clear: people in our communities are being pushed to the limit—cutting back on food, skipping medication, and still falling behind on bills.

🙌 Huge shoutout to ACORN leaders Mariah and Darryl for bringing the energy and keeping the crowd fired up all afternoon!

📺 The action also drew media attention from CBC, CTV, and Global News—helping bring our fight for energy justice to people across the province.

✍️ We connected with new folks, gathered petition signatures, and kept growing our movement—because more and more people are ready to fight back 💪

We’re demanding real solutions:
✔️ A permanent Energy Affordability Program, including:
• Bill rebates for low-income households
• Debt forgiveness for those falling behind
• A crisis fund for emergency support
✔️ Reduce NS Power’s guaranteed 9% profits
✔️ Energy-efficient upgrades to rentals—with protections against rent hikes and renovictions

We’re keeping the pressure on the Houston government to step up and act.

💥 We’re building momentum. We’re getting louder. And we’re not backing down.
Power is a necessity—not a profit stream.
