It was wonderful to see such a strong turnout for the 3rd annual Halifax Volunteer Fair at the Halifax Central Library yesterday, organized by the Volunteer Management Professionals of Nova Scotia (VMPNS).

With 27 organizations represented and a few hundred people stopping by throughout the day, the event was a meaningful opportunity for community members to connect with organizations and explore ways to get involved and make an impact.

Organizer Alex Cherry of VMPNS was also featured on CBC Information Morning. Did you catch the interview?

✨ NEW: IONS Spring "Possibility" Brief! As we wrap up the Black Futures Project, we are excited to share the insights and reflections with tangible workplace practices for the wider Community Impact Sector.

As part of our Beyond Decent Work campaign, this brief explores what it means to build more supportive and equitable workplaces, focusing on liberatory practices for pro-Black workplaces in the sector.

This brief highlights the effects of anti-Black racism in nonprofit workplaces, including burnout, inequities in leadership, career stagnation, and barriers to well-being. It outlines practical ideas for creating more inclusive, supportive, and sustainable organizations. By investing in equitable hiring, supporting Black-led organizations, and embedding culturally relevant practices, organizations can strengthen well-being and build more impactful workplaces.

Our Possibility Briefs highlight key challenges and opportunities across the sector, offering ideas and resources to support more equitable, inclusive, and sustainable organizations.

💫Are you a youth aged 15–30 in Nova Scotia seeking paid, meaningful work experience and career growth? Applications for the Spring ASCEND Cohort close March 15th!

ASCEND (Achieving Success through Community ENgagement & Development) connects youth not in employment, education or training (NEET) with paid placements in the Community Impact Sector. And last week, our team had a great time celebrating the successful second cohort! We gathered participating youth and employers from across Nova Scotia to share their achievements, highlight personal and professional growth, and reflect on the journey.

“The ASCEND program opened an incredible opportunity for me to gain meaningful experience in NS, through its network and community-driven approach.”

We are so proud to have been able to facilitate these relationships and implement feedback to continue making the program accessible and supportive. It's been such a joy hearing about how the ASCEND program is making an impact on young Nova Scotians.

We invite you to be a part of it!
Apply by March 15! Placements begin April 20:

Power in community solidarity! This morning, the Nova Scotia Government reversed $53.6 of the $130 million dollars of proposed cuts - a win for several Indigenous, African Nova Scotian, disability and seniors' initiatives.

People are the heart of what we do. Thank you to everyone for coming together to demonstrate the value of our sector's work. There are still so many Nova Scotians who's livelihoods are deeply affected by the remaining $76.4 million in provincial funding cuts. So while we celebrate our impact, we continue strategizing and working toward a more equitable future.

We invite community leaders to join us this Thursday, March 12 for a virtual town hall to discuss the effects of the remaining cuts, share resources, build peer support, and brainstorm how to respond collectively for the wellbeing of Nova Scotians.

RSVP at the link below to join the conversation:

“Our sector is the sector that provides hope to people, because we care for each other", says IONS' Executive Director, Benny-Welter Nolan. Thank you to the Halifax Examiner for the conversation about the recent Nova Scotia budget cuts to help highlight the detrimental effect on nonprofit organizations and our communities.

In an already stretched thin sector, these budget cuts target arts, cultural initiatives, and equity-denied communities. Over the past week, the sector and our supporters have shown up for each other in solidarity and to share stories of the very real consequences the funding cuts will have on Nova Scotians.

“A lot of our community members have disabilities and do not have a high level of privilege that allows them to spend a lot of their time on advocacy initiatives, but yet everyone is taking the time to show up because they care deeply about their communities and the impacts of this budget.”
