Nova Scotia received a D Grade in the latest Poverty Report Card from Food Banks Canada . And our Food Insecurity Grade is an F for the 4th year in a row.
What does that mean? It means 1 in 4 Nova Scotians face food insecurity. It means growing numbers in our Food Bank. It means community coming together to share their struggles and solutions to ongoing grocery price increases (see Reddit posts).
It means we are in a food security crisis.
Community can help each other, but we can't solve this crisis. We need policies that boost the well-being of those facing insecurity in our city and in our province. Cuts need to be reversed. Incomes need to be raised and guaranteed. And food essentials need to be affordable and accessible.
The single moms, children, newcomers, seniors, families, and unhoused neighbours that visit our Food Bank and food banks across Nova Scotia deserve this.
