In May, we trained seven volunteers and our summer legal intern to assist us in supporting migrant workers with applications for Vulnerable Worker Open Work Permits (VWOWPs).

One of the key sources of vulnerability faced by migrant workers are their closed work permits, which tie them to one employer. Migrant workers experiencing abuse in their workplace can apply for a VWOWP. If their application is successful, this allows them to leave the situation of abuse and work elsewhere for up to one year. But, most migrant workers face many hurdles in making these applications. That’s why we step in to support them to apply.

We thank our volunteer lawyer, Thiago Buchert, and Cristi Jerez, our Case Worker, for facilitating the training, and thank all the volunteers who joined us!

This week, a few of our volunteers had the opportunity to table at the 2026 CUPE Nova Scotia convention. It was a meaningful experience to connect with union members and discuss our shared commitment to equitable and fair labour conditions for all.

We were heartened to hear that several of the union workers were aware of the issues faced by migrant workers in Nova Scotia, and expressed solidarity. Solidarity between unionized and non-unionized migrant workers is critical. This was a key message shared by our Executive Director, Stacey Gomez, who was a keynote speaker at the Human Rights Forum during the convention.

Our team is growing! We are hiring for two new roles:

1) Project Lead, Legal Needs Assessment (33 hrs/week): Lead a community-based legal needs assessment to better understand the legal needs of migrant workers and the barriers they face in accessing legal information, services, and justice.

2) English Language Program Coordinator (15 hrs/week): Deliver our English for Migrant Workers Pilot Program, creating meaningful learning opportunities that support connection, confidence, and access to rights.

Both positions offer the opportunity to contribute to strengthening migrant worker rights and community supports in Nova Scotia.

On Tuesday, our Executive Director Stacey Gomez appeared before the Nova Scotia Legislature’s Standing Committee on Human Resources to raise concerns regarding migrant workers rights in Nova Scotia. Listen to her opening remarks.

As Stacey shared, migrant workers face many barriers to exercising their labour rights, as well as increased health and safety risks on the job.

Drawing from CMWR NS reports, Listening to Women Migrant Workers and Heavy Hearts & Minds, Stacey called for stronger labour protections and inspections, as well as MSI coverage on arrival for all migrant workers.
