The Order of the Knights of Rizal: Upholding the Ideals of a National Hero
The Order of the Knights of Rizal is a distinguished fraternal organization committed to preserving and promoting the ideals of Dr. José P. Rizal, the foremost national hero of the Philippines. Through its activities and outreach, the Order continues to honor Rizal’s life, inspire patriotism, and foster civic virtues across generations.
A Tradition of Honor and Brotherhood
The history of the Order of the Knights of Rizal traces back to December 30, 1911, when Colonel Antonio C. Torres gathered a group of men from various walks of life to commemorate the ex*****on and martyrdom of Dr. José Rizal. Each year, these men met to celebrate the hero’s birth and honor his memory on Rizal Day. Their symbolic participation on horseback, reminiscent of medieval knights known for chivalry, became a defining image of the group’s early years.
In order to formalize their efforts and expand their membership, these admirers of Rizal registered as a private non-stock corporation on November 16, 1916, under the name Orden de Caballeros de Rizal (Order of the Knights of Rizal). The organization’s first incorporators included Colonel Antonio C. Torres, Juan Flameño, Martin P. de Veyra, José A. del Barrio, and José S. Galvez. Colonel Torres, who served as Chief of Police in Manila before World War II, became the Order’s first Supreme Commander.
Since its founding, the Order has been led by a line of distinguished Supreme Commanders, including Martin P. de Veyra, Manuel Lim, Juan F. Nakpil, Herminio Velarde, and the incumbent, Justo P. Torres, Jr. Each leader has upheld the mission of the organization and furthered the work of commemorating Rizal’s life and teachings.
A Legislative Charter: Republic Act No. 646
Recognizing the importance of Rizal’s teachings in shaping national identity and civic responsibility, the Order sought to secure an official legislative charter. In 1951, the Supreme Council of the Order created a Committee on Legislation, chaired by Justice Roman Ozaeta, with members Sirs Carlos Hilado and Pedro Sabido. Their goal was to draft a bill that would give the Order of the Knights of Rizal the same legal recognition as the Boy Scouts of the Philippines.
The proposed measure, Senate Bill No. 251, gained support from prominent lawmakers, including Senators Enrique Magalona, Lorenzo Sumulong, and Camilo Osias, and Congressman Manuel Zosa of Cebu. The bill’s explanatory note emphasized the importance of officially recognizing the Knights of Rizal as an instrument to foster civic virtue, social discipline, and love for justice through Rizal’s teachings.
As stated in the bill:
“This Bill, if enacted into law, will also serve as a historical monument to Rizal; it will constitute an official recognition by the Republic of the Philippines of the inestimable value of his teachings and examples.”
On June 14, 1951, President Elpidio Quirino signed the measure into law, officially granting the Order of the Knights of Rizal its charter under Republic Act No. 646. This law allowed the organization to grow as a civic institution, continuing to spread the message of Rizal’s legacy both within the Philippines and globally.
