Our friends at Healthy Minds Cooperative are hosting two amazing events in HRM this June 🌈

On June 18, this Thursday, they unite with prideHealth in the iconic Glitter Bean Café to talk about local supports for the community.

On June 23, they're hosting a café-style discussion about q***r joy and thriving in a society where many barriers are still present.

If you are in HRM in the next couple of weeks, consider joining them!

On the last day of the Learning Circle, we were happy to welcome Colleen Belle from ISANS to our sunlit office☀

Colleen is the coordinator of the Welcoming Communities - a program that provides training for organizations to foster inclusive and welcoming environments for newcomers.

Newcomers is one of the most isolated and underserved caregiver populations, which is why it was so important for us to understand the challenges and barriers they face, and how we can be as welcoming and accessible for them as possible.

Thank you, Colleen, for sharing your knowledge! If you work with newcomers, consider reaching out to Colleen and booking the Building Intercultural Communities workshop for your organization!

In 2021, the Disability Rights Coalition won an appeal court case that found systemic discrimination against people with disabilities in Nova Scotia.

A human rights board created a list of reforms to fix the situation in our province. Many know this list as The Remedy, and it needs to be completed by 2028.

A key part of The Remedy is allowing people to choose where to live - helping them move from institutions to communities of their choice. Here's where MCL Supports comes into picture.

Metro Community Living offers housing, support and services to people with disabilities, so they can build meaningful lives in their communities.

They are committed to person-centred support, matching a person's values, preferences and goals. Everyone deserves the right to choose their community and have all the resources to lead a fulfilling, independent life.

Thank you, Alex, for coming and letting us know more about MCL 💜

This Monday, we met with Nova Scotia Moms.

NS Moms is an organization created by 8 mothers, who tried helping their children living with mental health conditions, but faced closed door after closed door.

Due to Nova Scotian privacy laws, these caregivers couldn't be a part of their children's health journey and advocate for their wellbeing. After battling their conditions, these youth and young adults died by su***de.

Now, the organization advocates for more compassionate and collaborative mental health care, with caregiver being included in the care team and heard.

📚 They have a wonderful library on their website, that could be helpful for anyone caring for a person who lives with a mental health condition: https://nsmoms.ca/library/recommendedreading.html

📚 They've also created a guide on advocating for your person at the physician's office. You can read it here: https://nsmoms.ca/pamphlets/index.html

Many people don’t realize they’re caregivers. In rural communities, where supports and resources can be harder to access, outreach like this matters even more.

We want to make sure no caregiver is left behind. That's why we’re so incredibly grateful to Meg Hodges and Tidal Transit for helping us reach caregivers in the Valley through bus advertising this summer.

If you’re riding the bus in Kings, Annapolis and Digby Counties this summer, keep an eye out for one of our banners 👀
