This past weekend, Samba Nova had the pleasure of hosting Philip and Valerie Galinsky. Philip, the leader of Samba New York and a highly respected samba mestre and teacher, led a series of workshops covering each instrument in the bateria. Along with practical instruction, he shared the history, culture, and traditions behind samba, as well as insights from his years of experience leading bands. Many members attended multiple sessions and came away inspired by both the learning and the sense of community. Samba people really are family, and that spirit is a big reason Samba Nova has thrived for more than 35 years. It was a tremendous privilege to spend time with Philip and Valerie and to experience Philip’s remarkable leadership, musicianship, and generosity firsthand. We’re still reflecting on everything we learned and the connections we strengthened over the weekend.
