Established by the United Nations in 1999, International Youth Day recognizes the leadership, creativity, perspectives, and contributions of young people while highlighting the barriers that can limit their ability to thrive.

At Dalhousie, young people are learning, creating, organizing, researching, advocating, and building community every day. Today, we celebrate the ideas, energy, and leadership you bring to our campuses and beyond.

International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples | August 9

There are an estimated 476 million Indigenous Peoples across the world, representing 5,000 cultures and the majority of the world’s 7,000 languages. Today honours their resilience, knowledge, and inherent rights.

Dalhousie sits in Mi’kma’ki, the ancestral and unceded territory of the Mi’kmaw, Wolastoqey, and Peskotomuhkati Peoples. As we mark this global day, we also recommit to truth, justice, and right relations locally.

Emancipation Day - Saturday, August 1

On August 1, 1834, the Slavery Abolition Act legally ended slavery across the British Empire, including in Canada. In 2021, Parliament unanimously recognized this day nationwide.

Here in Nova Scotia, home to one of Canada's oldest Black communities, Emancipation Day has been marked since 1846. It is a day to reflect on a painful history, honour the strength and perseverance of Black communities, and recommit to the ongoing fight against anti-Black racism.

While our page name has changed, our commitment to human rights and equity work remains the same. We will continue to collaborate closely with our colleagues in Human Rights & Equity Services (HRES) and share their important updates, resources, and initiatives with our community.

Our new handle better reflects the work of the Office of Equity and Inclusion and the evolution of our office. While our name has changed, our commitment hasn’t.

You’ll continue to find updates on EDIAB initiatives, events, educational resources, and opportunities from across Dalhousie. We’ll also continue to collaborate closely with Human Rights & Equity Services (HRES) and share their important work with our community.

Human Rights & Equity Services is hiring 3 Peer Educators to join the Sexual Violence Prevention Team (SVPT)! Peer Educators help facilitate workshops, support outreach and awareness initiatives, and promote a culture of consent, healthy relationships, and respect at Dal.

This is a great opportunity to build facilitation, leadership, and community engagement skills while contributing to meaningful prevention work.
