A new study published in Science found that switching from a gasoline vehicle to a battery-electric vehicle can significantly reduce lifetime carbon emissions, even when the gasoline car is still relatively new.
Researchers compared more than 400 combinations of vehicles, battery sizes, electricity sources, driving patterns, and replacement timelines.
On average, replacing a gasoline car with an EV reduced lifetime emissions by about 56%. The researchers also found that in 92% of the scenarios they modeled, switching to an EV before the gasoline vehicle reached the end of its useful life resulted in lower overall emissions.
One of the biggest factors was how much the gasoline vehicle would continue to be driven. The EV’s higher manufacturing emissions, mainly from its battery, were typically offset by lower emissions from driving in about three years.⚡🚘
