Atlantic Science Links Association (ASLA) Scientists and Innovators in the Schools (SITS): Sharing the excitement of science with Nova Scotia youth!

The Atlantic Science Links Association (ASLA) is a charitable science promotion organization which coordinates outreach programs for students in grades primary to twelve Since 1989, Scientists and Innovators in the Schools (SITS) has been promoting science and technology literacy among Nova Scotia’s students by building and nurturing relationships between the education and the science, technology,

engineering, and mathematics communities in the province. We recognize that the development of essential skills, such as inquiry, problem solving, reasoning and decision-making, depends heavily on the abilities, attitudes and knowledge gained through science education.

The fourth Atlantic Science Links Association (ASLA) Conference for Science Teachers offered four exciting labs for science teachers!

The full-day conference invited science teachers from across Nova Scotia to Dalhousie University where they participated in curriculum-related, hands-on labs, facilitated by Dalhousie scientists. The goal of the conference was to transfer practical, classroom-ready science content and techniques directly to teachers, strengthening science education at the grassroots level!

✅All aspects of the event were free of charge for teachers. ✅

The labs:
🔥Understanding and identifying mineral and crystal properties (Instructor: Dr. James Brenan with PhD student Peteris Rozenbaks)
🌿 Meet your neighbours: Plants in and around the schoolyard (Instructor: Prof. Lara Gibson)
🧬 Exploring DNA from fruit (Instructors: postdoc James Kho and PhD student Tiara Mulder)
🐟 Ocean School: Exploring the ocean through immersive multimedia (Instructor: Dr. Boris Worm)

Halifax Sci-Tech Expo Chief Judge Julia Sarty also provided a lunchtime information session on “Making Science Fairs Work for You”.

Huge thank you to the teachers who attended, lab hosts, volunteers, board members, funders, and conference organizers!

We are encouraging self-identifying girls in grades 10-12 from around Nova Scotia to get involved. The event will be held virtually via Zoom to allow students from rural and remote areas to participate without the boundary of traveling to Halifax. If you know any students who are interested in science (or who you think should consider a STEM field), please encourage them to sign up and submit a question through our online registration form. We would like to see this event reach as many students as possible, so please feel free to forward this message and the attached flyer to any teachers, students, parents, or community members that may be interested!
