Big congratulations to Russell Grosse on this well-deserved honour. πŸ‘πŸΎ

His continued commitment to preserving and sharing Black history, culture, and community has made a lasting impact across Nova Scotia.

Congratulations on receiving an Honorary Doctor of Civil Laws from the University of King’s College.

We the staff and board of the Black Cultural Centre/Society for Nova Scotia are so pleased to extend a heartfelt congratulations to our CEO, Russell Grosse, who is set to receive an honourary Doctor of Civil Laws from the University of King's College, Halifax at the upcoming invocation of their 26th President and Vice-Chancellor, Dr. Timothy Vine.

This honour recognizes Russell's ongoing and tireless commitment to sharing and preserving Black Canadian history and culture, and the conferral of this degree is particularly meaningful, given that he has been instrumental in building a partnership between the university and the Black Cultural Centre, with a shared goal of making King's a more welcoming place for Black students, staff, and faculty. His passion and dedication to the community is inspirational to us all, and we couldn't be more proud to see him receive this well-deserved honour. Congrats, Russell!

King's will also be awarding an honourary Doctor of Civil Laws to renowned writer and journalist, Inglis Professor Stephen Kimber, who spent decades training the next generation of storytellers at King's, and whose work has left an indelible impact on the university. We want to congratulate Prof. Kimber on this honour, as well.

Please note that we will be closing the Centre at 1:00pm tomorrow, October 7th, so that the BCCNS team can attend the invocation and cheer Russell on. πŸ™‚

Today, on the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, we honour Survivors, remember the children who never returned home, and recognize the families and communities who continue to carry the impacts of the residential school system.

Truth and reconciliation require more than reflection on September 30. They require continued learning, listening, respect, accountability, and action.

Listen. Learn. Remember. Act. 🧑

Ways to carry that responsibility forward:

β€’ Listen to and learn from Indigenous voices and Survivors.
β€’ Learn more about the history and lasting impacts of residential schools.
β€’ Read the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s 94 Calls to Action and consider where you can take action.
β€’ Support Indigenous-led organizations, businesses, artists, educators, and community initiatives.
β€’ Learn about the Indigenous communities, histories, languages, and treaties connected to the land where you live.

Reconciliation is ongoing. What we learn today should shape how we show up tomorrow and beyond.

That’s a wrap on the inaugural African Nova Scotian Municipal Youth Fellowship! πŸŽ“βœ¨

Last month, our inaugural Fellowship cohort came together one final time to share what they learned, celebrate their accomplishments and officially close out an incredible summer.

Over the course of the Fellowship, participants explored municipal government from the inside, connected with African Nova Scotian leaders and community members, developed professional and leadership skills, and gained new perspectives on how they can help shape the communities around them.

The closing celebration gave our Fellows an opportunity to reflect on that journey, share their experiences and ideas, and celebrate how far they had come.

While the program may be over, the goal was always bigger than one summer: creating pathways for young African Nova Scotians to see themselves as leaders, decision-makers and changemakers in their communities.

Congratulations to our inaugural cohort. We’re proud of what you accomplished and excited to see what comes next! πŸ‘πŸΎπŸ’šπŸ–€β€οΈπŸ’›

The African Nova Scotian Municipal Youth Fellowship was made possible through the partnership of the Delmore β€œBuddy” Daye Learning Institute, Halifax Regional Municipality and the Canadian Race Relations Foundation (CRRF), with support from the many mentors, facilitators, municipal staff and community leaders who shared their knowledge throughout the program.
