Screen Nova Scotia is excited to announce the selected participants for the 2026/27 Last Draft script development program ➡ Katerina Bakolias (Hell's Harbour) and Lynn Matheson (Out the Window).

This screenwriting program develops, to an advanced level, the feature screenplays of two Nova Scotia screenwriters by partnering them with established script development editors and producers. The goal of the Last Draft Program is to not only develop great scripts, but for these stories to become great films 🎬

This week we held the 10th annual Screen Nova Scotia Content Market, an industry event for emerging and established producers in Nova Scotia to meet with influential Canadian, U.S. and international broadcasters, distributors, sales agents, financiers, and studio executives.

The two day market saw over 450 pitch meetings scheduled by our team for local producers and top industry decision-makers, across all genres 🤝

Last week Screen Nova Scotia hosted the annual Familiarization Tour for US studio executives. This three-day guided cross-province tour showcased Nova Scotia's unique locations with a goal of turning participants into clients and attracting big-budget film and TV productions to the province 🎥

The itinerary included stops along the South Shore, Annapolis Valley, Cape Breton, and HRM, in addition to a visit to the newly launched Screen Nova Scotia Studios. Physical production executives from Hulu, Netflix, Paramount / CBS Studios, and Sony Pictures participated in the 2026 tour.

Congratulations to Screen Nova Scotia members who won prizes/awards at the Lunenburg Doc Fest last week:

🌟 Producer Israel Ekanem (Ubuntu Media) won The Launch Live Pitch Award, presented by CBC, for his short doc concept Colour Blind Phoenix.

🌟 Producer/director Justin Zoras and his film The Bookstore That Never Sleeps won both the Best Canadian Short Documentary and The Audience Choice Award for Best Short Documentary. The short doc explores a nocturnal Lunenburg bookstore that opens in the evening and only closes after the last customer of the night leaves.

The Lunenburg Doc Fest awarded a combined $36,000 worth of cash and in-kind prizes, including $20,000 for The Launch pitch contest.

Telefilm Canada has announced the selected films for the 2026-27 Talent to Watch Program 🎥 The program supports emerging filmmakers seeking to finance the production of their first feature. Congratulations to Screen Nova Scotia producer Samira Eblaghi, who received funding for her documentary Keepers Light, with director and screenwriter Maximilian Flint. Read more in Playback below 👇

The 2026-27 round of the Talent to Watch program received 136 applications, totaling $31.2 million in funding requests.

Screen Nova Scotia at TIFF ➡ This year’s TIFF gave us a lot to celebrate. Behind the red carpets and premieres, TIFF: The Market is where the business of getting films and television series made really happens. For its inaugural year, the four Atlantic provinces came together for Atlantic Canada Market Day at the Telefilm Canada Pavilion. Nova Scotia producers took part in panels, one-on-one meetings, and our collective presence brought far more people into the room than any of us could have reached alone.

During the Atlantic Canada event, the Honourable Marc Miller, Minister of Canadian Identity and Culture, signed modernized audiovisual co-production treaties with the Government of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, and the Kingdom of Spain.

Most excitingly, we launched Screen Nova Scotia Studios and shared this new chapter for our industry with the world! It was a proud moment for our team, and a great opportunity to show that Nova Scotia now has the crews, locations, incentives and infrastructure to compete for productions on a much bigger stage 🎬 🌎
