Are you taking part in Access Awareness Week this year?

This year's theme is "Disability Justice: Stronger Together First Voice Leading Change for Collective Action." Nova Scotians have been organizing community events during Access Awareness Week for the last 39 years to bring attention to the importance of removing barriers for people with disabilities.

The results from our recently completed Nova Scotia Quality of Life Survey will give our partners and advocates in disabilities communities groundbreaking data. We will share the first voice lived experience of Nova Scotia residents - broken down by disabilities connected to mobility, hearing, seeing, autism, intellectual disabilities, chronic illness, and more.

We thank our partners, includingNova Scotia League for Equal Opportunities and TEAMWork Cooperative, for promoting participation in the survey!

Our work at Engage Nova Scotia is first and foremost in service to Nova Scotians! Our primary focus will always be on the place we call home.

We are increasingly being recognized nationally and internationally for our novel ability to translate data into stories, action, and impact for a stronger society.

Earlier this month, we were cited in a landmark United Nations report commissioned by the UN Secretary General, entitled "Counting What Counts" on how to balance GDP growth with sustainable and inclusive societies as a leading framework that moves “metrics into action”.

We are flattered to be singled out by the UN and remain mindful that our learning is just beginning. There is still much work to be done in the years ahead for us to be truly sustainable and inclusive.

We are wishing you a happy, healthy long weekend ahead!

Victoria Day long weekend is a chance to take a breath, spend time in community, and enjoy the moments that make life feel joyful.

Our 2019 Nova Scotia Quality of Life Survey data told us that about half of Nova Scotians feel rushed at least a few times a week. Long weekends can serve as an important reminder to pause, recharge, and make time for the people and activities that support our wellbeing. As new survey data has recently been gathered across the province, we’re curious to find out: has life started to feel any different?

Our first report of initial survey findings will become available in the fall.

Last week was Mental Health Awareness Week in Canada and mental health is in the spotlight throughout May. We believe the Nova Scotia Quality of Life Survey will help us better understand how people across the province are doing with their mental health and wellbeing.

In our survey, we asked Nova Scotians about access to mental health services, sense of belonging to community, experiences of loneliness, and sense of isolation.

We are grateful to organizations like WellNS Research for their input and support of the Nova Scotia Quality of Life Survey and for helping ensure the work remains grounded in lived experience and reflects the needs of communities across the province.

Now that the Nova Scotia Quality of Life Survey has closed, what's next?

👉🏽Currently, all responses to the Nova Scotia Quality of Life Survey are being collected and entered in a secure database housed by the Canadian Index of Wellbeing (CIW). (We ensure anonymity by following industry-standard security protocols to protect the information of everyone who participated in the survey).

👉🏽The data will be weighted to represent Nova Scotia residents.

👉🏽The data will then be analyzed for trends across geographic and demographic groups.

👉🏽 We hope to have early results in fall of 2026, with further reports rolling out in 2027!

We are as eager as you are to learn more about the results! This is an incredible opportunity to tell a more complete story of Nova Scotian quality of life and what is really going on across the province.

Thousands of Nova Scotians have shared their stories through the Nova Scotia Quality of Life Survey. Thanks to you, we have successfully completed the largest undertaking of its kind in Canada.

As with our first survey in 2019, the results will provide us with a massive set of stories to seed and influence change for a stronger Nova Scotia. You have trusted us, and we are profoundly grateful.

We are excited that our work to understand the stories of quality of life for Nova Scotia residents is just the beginning of greater things.
