We’re delighted to host Dr. Chris Kilford, a member of the national board of the Canadian International Council (CIC), President of CIC Victoria, and Editor of Open Canada. Earlier this year, he also visited Poland and Latvia, meeting senior officials and members of the Canadian Armed Forces who are training Ukrainian military personnel and leading NATO’s Multinational Brigade in Latvia.
This promises to be an insightful and lively discussion about the state of global affairs—and what Canada’s role might be amid growing uncertainty. This event is particularly timely, coming just ahead of the Halifax Security Forum.

We are excited to announce our upcoming Public Talk and Panel with Kim Richard Nossal on Thursday September 25 from 6:00 PM to 8:30 PM at Paul O’Regan Hall in Halifax Central Library. It’s co-sponsored with Halifax Public Libraries as part of its Fall 2025 Program of Author Events.

We live in dangerous times. The global order has been disrupted by the re-election of Donald Trump and diplomacy based upon durable post-war alliances has been replaced by exchanges of missiles. Our featured speaker Kim Richard Nossal saw it coming and provided us with an early warning in his prophetic 2023 book, Canada Alone: Navigating the Post-American World. His book will provide the catalyst for our Reaction Panel, anchored by Dr Asa McKercher, Editor of the International Journal and based at the Mulroney Centre at St Francis Xavier University.

Reserve your spot today! It’s free but preference will be given to those who register in advance.

Please join us for our next Politics in the Pub event: The State of Internal Trade! Mark your calendars for an engaging evening on June 23 from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM at The Old Triangle in downtown Halifax.

We're delighted to host Ryan Manucha - a leading expert on interprovincial trade in Canada. Ryan is working on the front lines of dismantling trade barriers across the country by supporting governments through his deep research and advocacy. He will share with us an overview of the topic of internal trade, where the issue stands, how we got here, and the outlook.

Ryan penned multiple popular articles (like this one) and insightful policy reports (like this one). However, my favourite piece of his work remains his phenomenal book - Booze, Ci******es, And Constitutional Dust-ups: Canada's Quest For Interprovincial Free Trade Book By Ryan Manucha, (Paperback) | Indigo. It is engaging, full of fascinating stories and anecdotes about trade between Canadian provinces and territories. I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to better understand our unique country!

In recent months, breaking down interprovincial trade has gained historical momentum. First, it was driven by the shifting international trade environment and then by Nova Scotia passing a "game changer" legislation - Free Trade and Mobility within Canada Act. Even His Majesty King Charles III, King of Canada mentioned in the Speech from the Throne the commitment of the federal government "to remove all remaining federal barriers to internal trade and labour mobility by Canada Day."

As we are approaching the July 1 deadline to remove internal trade barriers, Ryan is one of the best people to ask your questions about the history, present and possible future of Canada's internal trade.

Reserve your spot today! Spaces are limited! Don’t miss this unique opportunity to be part of a vibrant discussion in a relaxed and social atmosphere.

CIC Halifax is excited to invite you to the CIC-Halifax 2025 Annual General Meeting on March 5th from 6 PM-8:30 PM at the Garden Retreat, Restaurant and Lounge.

This year’s AGM will feature a lead presentation by Dr. Robert Huish of Dalhousie University, followed by a fireside chat with Q&A on the timely topic: US Imperialism and the Future of Canada-US Relations. A buffet dinner reception will also be provided.

Lead Presentation:

The Empire Strikes Back: Why Donald Trump’s Geographic Illiteracy is the World’s Greatest Threat.

In this presentation, Dr. Huish will aim to unpack Donald Trump’s bluster from the actual imperialist ambitions of the American empire. Which rants and riffs should we be worried about? Which ones can be dismissed? Which ones are gutting the United States from within, and which ones are setting the course for devastating conflict?

Drawing on decades-long research of U.S. imperialism in the Americas and the changing nature of international relations in the global South, Bob proposes that many of Trump’s suggestions must be taken seriously as the U.S. pivots to demonstrations of strength, rather than dialogue, for its foreign relations. Most importantly, the resistance to the New American Empire will require a new skill set in geographies of activism, solidarity, and resistance, unlike ever before.

Event Details:

Date: March 5, 2025
Time: 6:00 PM - 8:30 PM
Location: The Garden Retreat, Food Bar & Lounge, 1446 Queen St, Halifax
Ticket Price: CIC Members: $20, Non-members: $30

Your ticket includes one alcoholic beverage (preferably made in Nova Scotia!) or a non-alcoholic option, along with a buffet featuring a special menu curated for this event.

About Dr. Robert (Bob) Huish:

Robert is an associate professor of international development studies at Dalhousie University. He has researched, spent time in, and fled from heavily sanctioned countries that have been targets of U.S. hegemony and imperialism, which is why he’s now turning his attention to Canada.

Throughout his research, Robert has held close the teachings of Eduardo Galeano and José Martí, who illuminate the nature of United States imperialism and how it has transformed from the 19th century to the 21st while remaining true to its constitutional values.

We look forward to seeing you at what promises to be an engaging and insightful evening!!
